I forgot to credit KholdStare in the last post for taking the lead in preparing the community artwork page and hosting the contests for exhibition poster and signature-banner submissions.

Thanks also to hinakatbklyn who is our latest donor. ISML would not be possible without the generous efforts of all the community and staff. Thanks for voting and thanks for spreading the word to new people.

Community Artwork Portal

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

We’re happy to announce our portal for community artwork, currently featuring posters from Aquamarine Exhibition and support (signature) banners from Topaz Period.

http://www.internationalsaimoe.com/community/artwork.php

A few weeks ago we started art contests on the Forum. Anyone in the community may participate to share their talents and learn from others. For now, they are mainly Photoshop/GIMP contests about ISML’s Exhibition competitors, but more types and categories may be hosted in the future.

The main artwork page lists the winners of the contests, but there are also links to view the entire entrant list for each Period. So almost all submissions will be featured on the main site.

Congratulations to all our participants and winners, both artists and competitors alike.

Corrected statistics

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Topaz 1 rankings were incorrect upon release, but they are now corrected. This is for the rankings calculations (both Topaz and Overall) only. The vote totals and winners from yesterday’s matches have not changed.

Thanks to the many keen eyes in our Community for discovering it first; ISML Staff apologizes for not catching the error prior to release.

EDIT: Was alerted to a few more corrections that were needed. Those are now applied; more details in the first comment below.

Aquamarine Necklace Showdown

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

We are at the final round of Aquamarine Period; it has been an exciting couple of weeks leading up to this point. This year, ISML introduces a new matchup that will determine the winner of the Necklace, dubbed the “Necklace Showdown” (but also more simply, Round 8).

Here the top 7 eligible Contestants participate in a free-for-all match. Eligible Contestants are those who have not yet won a Necklace this year. Since this is the first Period, nobody will be passed up in the Aquamarine standings for this round.

Simply acquiring the most votes in this round does not win the Necklace. As noted in the 2011 Charter, a score is calculated from the votes earned today and the SDO rating over the whole Period. So performance over the last seven rounds do play a large role, and the top seed has a greater advantage entering the match.

5. At the end of the round, each Contestant receives a Necklace Score, calculated as the product of her voting percentage for the round of and her SDO for the entire Period.
6. The Contestant with the highest Necklace Score will be awarded the Necklace. Ties are resolved according to the procedure list in the preceding section (Rule VII.E).

We have four arenas of exhibition matches, one of which consists of the seven exhibition winners in each of the voting rounds this Period. Please vote in all arenas; abstains will not be allowed.

Congratulations to everyone for making this far, and good luck to our competitors! To the voters, please enjoy today’s match!

Charter update

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Our 2011 Charter must be amended to address the pools for Phase III.

“On 28 March 2011, clauses VI.B.1, VI.E.1, and VI.H.1 were removed because this was discovered to be very impractical, difficult, and potentially unfair to Candidates. Instead, Staff will do their best to minimize repeat opponents, but group balance takes higher priority.”

The original clauses state that each round of Phase III will match up Candidates that did not face each other in the previous round (or in Phase II in the case of Round 1). This sounded like a good idea when drafting the Charter, but as we have now observed in practice, this is very impractical … if not nearly impossible to do given the combinations available to us. Most importantly, it is potentially unfair if we have to force an unfavorable matchup for some Candidates just to meet this requirement. Our seeding throughout the Preliminaries has been based on performance in previous rounds and saimoe events, and that criteria should continue to take top priority in order to generate balanced groupings. We will still make adjustments to minimize repeated opponents or same-series opponents, but it cannot be guaranteed.

Phase I completed

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Congratulations to the Phase I winners! We now have our first set of Contestants for the ISML 2011 Regular Season. You can view their profiles at our Contestants page. Biographies are available in English and Chinese. We do not yet have portraits for our newest characters; we are working on them right away and apologize for the delay.

It’s been quite a busy week as we transition from Phase I to II with no break in between. Up next is a single-elimination tournament with brackets of 8. Also on the Contestants page at the bottom is the bracket list for our remaining 128 Candidates. They each face new competitors than in Phase I. May the best girl win! Sixteen more Regular Season Contesants will be known by the end of next week. We will have bracket images prepared soon, too, to help you visualize the tournament bracket more easily.

Thanks to all the voters, our community, and supporters. We received one donation last week; thanks to leekinghin for the gift. No matter how large or small, each contribution helps pay our server costs for future years of ISML. As of right now, 2011 is paid for, and we are about $80 into the $350 cost for 2012.

The first day of voting for Phase II starts soon; please look forward to it!

Ad-blocking ‘bug’

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

I just found out that some Firefox users might not have been able to see the Phase I scoreboard. This is if you have the AdBlock Plus extension or something similar that prevents certain HTML elements from appearing. In our case it was because I used a CSS identifier named “leaderboard.” I have changed that to a different name, so that issue should clear up. You may need to refresh your browser cache if you don’t see the fix right away.

On a side note, you may want to disable blocking for internationalsaimoe.com entirely. Our site is funded through donations from the community and staff, so I have no plans at all to place advertisements on the site (especially not the pop-up kind).

Preliminaries to begin sooner

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Phase I of the Preliminary Period will now begin on Sunday, 27 February.

We extended the number of voting days from 6 to 8 in order to organize the arenas a little better. Our pool of Candidates this year is larger than in 2010 as well, so adding more days makes for better pacing of the 4 Rounds in Phase I. So Sunday will feature Groups 1 through 8. Tuesday will be Groups 9 through 16. And then on Thursday will be Round 2, beginning again with Groups 1 through 8.

The Charter will be appended, and our event calendar on the Rules FAQ has been updated.

We have not completed all of our character portraits (avatars), so they will be missing for the time being. They should be ready by this weekend and definitely by Sunday when the voting round begins.

The groupings for Phase I are also released. Candidates in each group will participate in a round-robin tournament of 1vs1vs1 matches. Points are earned for first and second place in each match. Group winners advance to the Regular Season while the remaining girls enter Phase II.

Voting rounds are now less than a week away!

2011 Voter Survey

Saturday, January 1st, 2011

Happy New Year! It’s now 2011 and the next ISML tournament draws ever closer. Nominations are in February this year to allow characters from this winter season to be eligible; we hope to see a lot of new faces join the League this year.

On our voting page is a voter survey we hope you will take for us. After three years, we are still collecting as much data as we can in order to maximize the tournament’s excitement for everyone. This survey asks a few demographic- and interest-related questions. You are not required to respond, and your submissions will be anonymous (however we will check IPs as normal for security purposes).

As an incentive for answering our survey, we have set up special 2-vs-2 exhibition matches on the voting page. After you have answered our 16 questions, you may vote on the exhibition matches before submitting the form.

The survey will be left open for one full week, so please help me inform all of our ISML voting community of the event. :) Results of the exhibition matches will be released soon after the survey closes. Thank you, and let’s all look forward to a great 2011 season!

P.S. – The website has just shifted over to 2011 data; some pages may still be buggy as I work out the kinks.

ISML 2011 Charter

Saturday, December 4th, 2010

The ISML 2011 Charter is now available online.

http://www.internationalsaimoe.com/charter2011.php

We have made changes to this upcoming ISML year. A quick overview of the big ones:
1. No more automatic entries to the regular season (only to preliminaries).
2. A character cannot win more than one Necklace per tournament year.
3. We added a special 8th round to each Period to help decide the Necklace winner.
4. Postseason will be single-elimination, not double.

To accommodate #4, Staff amended the ISML Constitution to change “double elimination” to “elimination-style” in the text. This gives us more flexibility in organizing each year’s tournament. Plus after three years of data collection, we have concluded that a double-elimination tournament is not really effective in saimoe.

On 1 January, the 2010 site will be archived (but still accessible to you), and the 2011 website will begin. Nominations begin on 6 February. We hope these rule changes will bring a much more balanced and exciting year to the League in 2011; we look forward to seeing new faces and crowning new champions.

Thank you for your patience and continued support! Also, all of your donations have successfully paid our server costs for the next year; we appreciate it very much! ISML will continue to be brought to you advertisement-free and with hardly any downtime.
