Delayed Start to E6

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Voting for Emerald 6 began 90 minutes late today because of technical issues (timers not executing properly). Therefore voting will end 90 minutes “late,” too, in order to have the voting page available a full 24 hours. Emerald 6 will be open until 1630 GMT tomorrow.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Added Note: Results will still be available on the correct time at 0300 GMT Friday (10.5 hours after voting ends).

Timer issues

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

For some reason this week, the timers on the website are not operating as they should be. Apologies for not discovering that the voting page for Sapphire 2 was left open until just recently. This won’t affect match results, since all ballots are timestamped, and we can easily crop all votes that came in after 1500 GMT.

I will work on resolving the timer issue so everything begins and ends at the proper time as they had been.

All events will stay on schedule.

Schedule Release

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Today we are releasing the regular season schedule for ISML 2010. It is currently available only in English; translations and other improvements are on the way.

We withheld the schedule at first in order to give more focus to each present match as it occurred. Last year we observed that some of our voting community were too focused on future matches, voting for reasons other than a Contestant being more moe than her opponent in a particular arena. Saimoe is still the top priority and goal of the tournament, and we try to preserve that every day.

After three Periods of releasing the schedule one match at a time, we came to additional observations. We took a lot of care devising our schedule for fairness, and as a result, it had a formulaic construction that some of our community were soon able to decipher. Fortunately, even with that knowledge available, we did not discover the same voting patterns that had impacted certain Rounds in ISML 2009.

We want to keep things exciting and fun for our community as a whole. We believe the schedule release will generate more interest and discussion in ISML without sacrificing match integrity. This is mostly thanks to our large and diverse (and still growing) community! Everybody’s participation keeps ISML balanced, and we couldn’t ask for more.

Reading the schedule is optional; if you would prefer to view matches one-by-one, continue watching the main page and voting page, as the “next match preview” will still be available. In addition to the schedule page, Contestant biographies will feature a schedule, but this will be hidden until you click on the link to view it.

If you lurked our forums, you may have noticed a sneak preview of the regular season schedule. A small discussion is available there if you want more information on this release or if you want to contribute your own comment or question. Visit http://www.internationalsaimoe.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=987.

We hope you enjoy the second half of the regular season; it has been exciting for me, and I look forward to more interesting results. Sapphire will start on Sunday!

Back to normal

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

As part of April 1 festivities worldwide, we temporarily changed our banners to reflect the International Saigar League, where voters would choose the most gar among anime males, as opposed to the familiar moe among anime girls. We’re not actually hosting such a tournament, though I’ve been surprised to see a positive response here and there about it. I don’t think a Saigar will be in our future, though.

The aquamarine borders were temporarily red, and a man-on-man match was placed at the top of the featured match previews. The colors have been reverted now, and the match moved to the bottom of the listings to avoid confusion in the future. If you saw our forums yesterday, I installed a temporary Naruto-based theme.

The visual elements are back to normal now, and we have still been keeping to our schedule. Aquamarine 6 results will be out later today, and the finale, Round 7, will start on Sunday.

Site updates

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

The Aquamarine page is now ready; all results from the Period will be stored in there. Similar pages for future Periods will appear when their time arrives. Cumulative statistics for the whole season are viewable on the main Statistics page.

Some clarifications were needed on the 2010 Charter to reflect the extra seeding matches that occured during the Preliminaries in addition to describing part of the Regular Season tiebreaker process in more detail. Nothing major was affected in this update.

The Rules FAQ has a few statements regarding the Regular Season statistics and how we define Strength of Schedule (SoS) and other indices.

Character biographies are steadily being updated this week with current statistics and tournament information. A page archiving all the exhibition competitors is in development.

Today we received a new donation. Thank you, Snape!

Aquamarine 1 Preview, plus Contestant Bios

Friday, March 19th, 2010

The wait is almost over! We’re two days away from the start of ISML 2010′s Regular Season — get excited!

The match preview for Aquamarine 1 is now available. It includes one Exhibition Match at the end in Arena 26; we’ll have a different exhibition matchup every Round in addition to our regular round-robin shuffling of our fifty Contestants.

The same basic rules apply: vote in at least 8 arenas, voting stays open for 24 hours with results coming out 12 hours after voting closes. Please check our Charter and Constitution for further details, or ask a question here or on the forums.

The Contestant biographies should all be available, but we are still behind on updating everybody’s statistics. We have some staff members on the project, but we are open to new volunteers who’d like to help as well. Profiles such as Shana or Haruhi are more complete, and you can use theirs as an idea to how to populate our other biography pages.

Thanks for your patience!

Staff updates

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

We have a small change in our senior staff. Juice is stepping down in order to concentrate more on some real-life issues that have recently come up, one of which is a new full-time job he’s very happy about. We’re proud of him and wish him the best. Juice has been a great help in reforming our scheduling procedures since 2009.

chaosprophet has been appointed to take his place. chaos has devoted a lot of time to the tournament since the end of last year, organizing information and helping out with a lot of the busy work needed to get all our I’s dotted and T’s crossed. :)

SirWence joins staff as an advisor; he also helps as a moderator on the forums.

Archived featured matches, timer change

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Older featured match previews and teasers can now be viewed at this page. Thanks to all those who contributed and continue to write for us!

Everyone in the ISML Community is invited to submit match descriptions for upcoming matches (in multiple languages as well). Selected writeups (which are usually all of them) get posted on the front page while voting takes place.

Want to write for us? Visit the forums to share what you have. During the Preliminary Period, we are accepting submissions on this thread.

In other news, today we have reduced the voting timer to 4 minutes (240 seconds). We hope for everyone’s continuing cooperation with the timer in our effort to collect legitimate ballots and to help ensure the accuracy of voting results.

Bug report

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

If you voted for the first time in ISML today, you may have gotten this error:

“Insert error (IPVoteCount)”

This issue has been resolved. Your ballot was still recorded, but a typo in the script caused this message to show up in place of the “Thank you for voting” message. This is why you may have gotten the “This IP has already submitted a vote” message if you tried to submit your ballot a second time, because it was already recorded on the first try.

A different error that caused the voting form not to load in the first 4 minutes of the polling period was also fixed. It was a short enough period of time that we will not need to extend voting hours.

Thanks everyone for helping out and for your patience with the issue. :D

A brief confirmation error

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Voters in the first 20 minutes or so of Seeding 2 experienced an error in the confirmation screen, which lit up the wrong character portraits after a ballot was submitted.

This was an error in the display only; your ballot was still recorded correctly as you intended on the voting screen. The code provided in the text boxes was still consistent with your votes.

Sorry for the confusion!

…And while I’m on the topic, Shana and Hinagiku will receive points equal to the highest % of votes received in this round by any one Contestant. Don’t worry too much if the final seeding results are not what you may have wanted; the purpose of this tournament is to give us a recent measure of relative Contestant strength, so we are able to build a balanced Regular Season schedule. The difference between, say, 1st and 5th place won’t be very large.

Thanks, everyone, for sticking with us through this. :)
