Graphic fixes

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Last night while updating the match visualization graphs for Day 1, we noticed an incorrect ordering of Candidates for Groups 5 and 14. These errors have now been fixed. The matchups in Group 5 that took place yesterday were correct, so we are properly on track. We apologize, though, if the graphics had thrown off your anticipation for a particular match day.

Much thanks to melange for taking the time to design, update, and repair all the match visualizations. Also on the front page, we welcome back amdrag as a contributor for our featured match previews.

Day 1 over…

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

We had a great start to the Preliminary Period today. The voter turnout was really good, as evidenced by the vote totals seen in the results tonight. Congratulations to this round’s winners from Groups 1 through 9. 10 through 14 are next, as well as Round 2 of Groups 1 through 5.

The scoreboard came online a little late, but it’s on the front page now. In Phase I, winners get 4 points while runner-ups get 2 points. (Candidates who tie will split the points more evenly.) After 4 Rounds (6 days of voting), the winner of each Group advances. And then we move on to Phase II.

A “Preliminary Groups” link has been added to the menu bar under “Contestants,” where you can view all the details of the Preliminary Period at any point throughout the year. The special graphs for Round 1 will be available tomorrow.

Day 2 starts very soon, so stay tuned for more ISML action!

Preliminaries have begun!

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The wait is over! Voting for Phase I, Round 1, Day 1 is now open.

http://www.internationalsaimoe.com/voting/

We mentioned that the four rounds of Phase I will be split into six days. Day 1 will cover the first 9 Groups for Round 1. On Tuesday, Day 2, we will have voting for Groups 10-14 of Round 1 as well as Groups 1-5 of Round 2. This keeps the amount of groups at 9 or 10 per day.

The voting page may still seem a little long compared to last year’s, but we just have that many eager Candidates hoping to enter the ISML main tournament. :) Good luck to everyone!

Thanks also to maglor who provided featured match descriptions on the front page. We wanted to have a little discussion/promotion on matches that we found particularly interesting today; however, system-wise, they are not any more important than all the other matches today. Please be sure to vote in all of them!

Voting will stay open for 24 hours. After polls close, we will have results ready on the front page in 12 hours.

Preliminary groups released

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

We have released the groupings for Phase I of the Preliminary Period. See them on the front page or here.

Phase I will be a round-robin tournament in each of the 14 groups. Each Candidate will face two other Candidates in the group per Round. This will take 4 Rounds to complete, but we’re spreading the matches out over 6 days to make it a bit easier on everyone.

Phases II and III will have different groupings. Please review our Charter or the Rules FAQ for more details.

The emblems next to each Candidate are representations of the series or franchises in which she is involved. They serve a greater role in our Space Opera project, a community-run “unofficial storyline” of sorts for ISML. More information on this may be available later if we continue to pursue the idea; for now you can view or join in on the brainstorming on our Forum.

Additionally, we have an ISML Fantasy competition going on in the Forum. If you think you’re good at predicting the winners of each round, come join us!

Nomination totals released

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

We’re now releasing the nomination totals for characters who received 18 or more nominations.

http://www.internationalsaimoe.com/statistics/noms.php

Over 350 characters received fewer than 18 nominations. There may be a margin of error of 1 or 2 for the characters with 18 or 19 nominations, as that’s where we stopped triple-checking values. The top 118 we can definitely confirm.

New Candidates Announced

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

The list of characters who advance from the Nomination Period are now posted on the front page. In addition, version 1 of our Contestants page is online at http://www.internationalsaimoe.com/contestants/ and is also accessible from the menu bar up top. The voting arena has been removed temporarily while we prepare for the Preliminary Period.

The Contestants page lists our 16 Contestants already in the Regular Season and our 126 Candidates who will participate in the preliminary rounds. Character profiles will be available soon.

Nomination totals will be released at a later date. Groupings for Phase I of the Preliminary Period will be released at a later date as well. Round 1 begins on 31 January.

Congratulations to the winners!

Revisiting Relegations – an apology and new statement

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

As you know, the voting community is ISML’s most valuable asset, because without it and without you there wouldn’t be an ISML at all. We, the Staff, do our job as organizers because your participation and your excitement motivate and inspire us. We want to host the best saimoe tournament we can, and that means representing your voice and your will as we stucture and execute this contest.

About a week ago, we made a decision regarding character eligibility: Restrictions were added such that characters from Touhou Project would not, in their current state, be eligible for the 2010 main event. This particular decision has had no issues, but it caused a conflict regarding the validity of 2009 Relegation, and we had to make another decision.

At the time, we believed the fairest resolution was to void 2009 Relegation in its entirety. We did not want Reimu’s exclusion to have caused regret from voters, who would have otherwise voted for other characters and thus changed the outcome of the tournament. To clear up the potential “what-if” situations, we elected to drop Relegation completely and start fresh.

However, you have voiced your concerns, and we have been listening. Over the last two days the Staff debated the issue again, and our conclusion now is that we were wrong. Rather than Mikoto, Mai, Sayuri, and Ayu having unclear futures as a result of Reimu’s disqualification, you have voiced instead that they are still winners and should advance to the 2010 Preliminaries.

Because our original justification for the first decision was fairness in your best interest, we don’t have any reason to deny this recent concern when your interests are different than we had thought.

In the 2010 Charter**, we have restored Statement I.C. which states that the “Top 5 finalists of the ISML 2009 Relegation Tournament”, pending eligibility (which only prohibits Reimu), will be given automatic entry to the 2010 Prelims. Statement I.E., which was added to void Relegation, is now removed.

You will still have 12 nomination slots for your benefit.

We apologize again for the mistake and the confusion it caused, but we hope that everything is on the right track now as the new year approaches. Just like you, we are very excited about 2010, and we want to make sure it’s done right. Thank you for all your input and feedback.

** The Charter is still in draft status, so we are still making modifications and additions. We promise to complete the entire document by Jan 1, so you are clear from Day 1 of the tournament what all the rules are. And any modifications since that day will come in the form of an amendment.
