Most Memorable ISML matches ver. 2015

Post by maglor » Tue Mar 03, 2015 7:28 am

We had this poll before, but I am wondering how people's opinion has changed with passage of time, so here is the 2015 March version of ISML memorable match poll. To get things started please nominate up to 8 ISML matches that is most memorable to you, for whatever the reason. If you want, please give us explanation like how that match broke your heart or how pleasantly surprised you were by the result or how the match result shocked and awed you or why that match was so pivotal or so important to you for personal reason or whatever. I will collect nominations for the next 96 hours and then set up poll(s) depending on how the nomination is distributed.

so please nominate up to 8 ISML matches you remember the most.

I can name more than 8, but if most memorable, it's the 2011 final match. There are basically three reasons. Firstly, that was my first time voting in ISML. Secondly, that was imo the top moment in ISML since 2008, with more than 17000 votes involved. Thirdly, that match involved two ISML legendary contestants, and gave me a complex feeling towards Mikoto for years. Overall, if I were only able to keep one match in mind, that's the one.

My nominations

1) 2008 Topaz 9 Sakurazaki Setsuna 299 over 293 Izumi Konata

Negima factions sealed the victory for their favorite series with this shocking win for Setsuna over Konata. This match let the creation of one of the most moe necklace poster ever, and made many realize how cute Setsuna can be

2) 2008 Diamond 2 Shana 565 over 546 Fate Testarossa

Check out how intense things got : -> http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread. ... 8&page=620" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ( Note this was only the start. It kept up until we got an awesome comic drawing of people. sadly that comic bit is erased ) This was one of the early times when ISML cracked 1000 votes

3) 2009 Aquamarine 9 Sakagami Tomoyo 1411 over 1306 Shana

during 2009 Sakagami Tomoyo destroyed the flawless season ambitions of Two contenders. This match was special as this loss was the only loss Shana suffered during 2009 Regular season. Shana would not claim a share of Regular season lead in 2009 until Sakagami Tomoyo beat Suzumiya Haruhi in Emerald 9

4) 2009 Double elimination Round 1 Shana 1981 over 1932 Holo

Never did a 16th seed come so close to beating the top seed. Holo really was special, but because she had bad regular season record, she drew too strong an opponent twice, and ended up finishing 13th for the season

5) 2009 DE Final Tiara match Katsura Hinagiku 2117 over 2106 Shana

Katsura Hinagiku entered the post season as 11th seed. She first beat defending champion #6 seed Fate, and people thought it was merely anti-champion bias. She then beat #3 seed Tomoyo but people were more fascinated by #7 Nagato Yuki beating #2 Suzumiya Haruhi. She then beat Yuki which people thought was helped by Haruhi fans' rage votes. But, then, Hinagiku shocked the world by beating Shana, convincingly. #11 beating #1 seed! This totally ruined Shana's chance, but still Shana fans held on. Shana fans regrouped and demolished Sakagami Tomoyo for the right to challenge Hinagiku once again. In an epic battle that saw ISML grow up to challenge KBM and JAST, Hinagiku held on, denying Shana her best chance for Tiara and forever making it impossible for ISML staff to leave out 11th seed from postseason consideration.

6) 2011 postseason Semifinal Shana 7624 over 6929 Tachibana Kanade

Tachibana Kanade seemed unstoppable and on the verge of perfect season. People didn't give Shana much a chance. It was Shana's turn to shock the world.

7) 2012 Postseason Phase II quarterfinal Eucliwood 6480 over 4920 Misaka Mikoto

Misaka Mikoto was riding high with her Stella division win and convincing wins during PS I. People were hoping for her to challenge Kanade and become first ever repeat Tiara winner. It is possible that Mikoto fans thought Eucliwood was a pushover, thus nothing of worry. Their complacency killed them big time. This started Mikoto's PS II curse which lasted to today.

8) 2014 Postseason Phase I Stella Circlet Final Tachibana Kanade 3522 over 3503 Misaka Mikoto

Mikoto beat Kanade in the regular season. She was almost never challenged during the entire 2014. She should reclaim the Stella circlet from her arch-rival Kanade. Kanade fans quietly had other ideas. In a match where we saw great amount of campaigning by both side, Kanade prevailed. Mikoto fans made big ruckus about Kanade fansite using bribes, but when that was investigated, it turned out that the said Kanade fansite rewarded people for posting votes, even if they voted for Misaka Mikoto . It should be noted that the several Mikoto fans were engaged in various attempts to "cheat", as well. The ruckus had many repercussions which we may still be feeling some. The loss made Mikoto be matched against Yoshino, who was #2 in Nova division during regular season. Yoshino made sure the Mikoto's PSII curse lived on.

2014 Postseason Phase I Stella Circlet Final Tachibana Kanade 3522 over 3503 Misaka Mikoto

This is the most memorable one to me. So much saga.

I guess that's about it.

Hmm since that Shana's surprise defeat in 2009 RS (that gave my beloved Haruhi her strong RS lead) is already mentioned, think I'm going to mention something much newer:

2014 Nova Division Final Round 1-3, all Nanami's matches
Day 1: Aoyama Nanami vs Chitanda Eru, when she edged a very close win that turned her fate in the tournament and maybe in this year's tournament as well
Day 2: Aoyama Nanami vs Yoshino, The first of the notorious anti-vote movement against DAL by Asuna fans
Day 3: Aoyama Nanami vs Tokisaki Kurumi, The third of the notorious anti-vote movement against DAL by Asuna fans
Giving his love for life, and died dreaming about her in the end. A real happy man, right? ~

2013: Topaz 1, Mikoto vs Kanade (The happiest day of my life)

2014: Stella Finals: Mikoto vs Kanade (This should have been the Tiara finals instead of what we got)

2014: Ruby Necklace: (So stupid, Kurumi given the necklace on a silver plate, and throws it away to get nothing!)

2014: Tiara Semi Finals: Kanade vs Kotori (A match which will live in infamy, Kotori solidifies her position has 2014 Champion. Since I still can't seem to forget it, it will remain "memorable".)

Though I'm only started voting during Topaz 2013, but these are definitely some good matches.

1) 2008 Topaz 9 Sakurazaki Setsuna 299 - 293 Izumi Konata
Sakurazaki Setsuna ranked 40th at the Regular Season, but this didn't stop her from getting a necklace from the other contestants.

2) 2009 Double Elimination Tiara Final Katsura Hinagiku 2117 - 2106 Shana
#11 beating #1 seed, not once but twice?

3) 2011 Sapphire Necklace Match
Both Azusa and Ruri have the same SDO, the one who get the most vote will be the winner, and Ruri managed to get extra 70 votes that denied Azusa chance to win anything until now.

4) 2011 Postseason Semifinal Shana 7624 - 6929 Tachibana Kanade
Tachibana Kanade lost only one match, and this lost cause her to lose the chance to get a perfect score for the year.

5) 2012 Aquamarine Necklace Match
With almost 12 SDO down, and yet Tachibana Kanade managed to steal the Necklace from Aisaka Taiga.

6) 2012 Postseason II Quarterfinal Eucliwood Hellscythe 6480 - 4920 Misaka Mikoto
Eucliwood Hellscythe denied Misaka Mikoto to become repeat Tiara winner.

7) 2013 Postseason II Quarterfinal Eucliwood Hellscythe 6555 - 5644 Shiina Mashiro
And again, Eucliwood Hellscythe denied Shiina Mashiro to get a perfect score where Shiina Mashiro lost only one match in 2013.

8) 2014 Ruby Necklace Match
Very close match where top 4 contestants only separated by 37 votes.

1) 2011 Sapphire Necklace Match : Still, the most competitive Necklace Match ever.

2) 2012 Elimination 3 (Division Semifinal) - Kuroneko 5062 vs. 5061 Eucliwood Hellscythe : The 1-vote-difference is still impresive.

3) 2013 Elimination 1 - Akiyama Mio 4200 vs. 5676 Aragaki Ayase : An entry into League Finals of a humble Tier 7.

4) 2013 Elimination 7 (Quarter Final) - Shiina Mashiro 5644 vs. 6555 Eucliwood Hellscythe : A terrible nightmare of Nova Division.

5) 2014 Ruby Necklace Match : The next best Necklace Match to 2011 Sapphire.

6) 2014 Elimination 4 (Division Final) - Misaka Mikoto 3503 vs. 3522 Tachibana Kanade : The advent of a historical 3rd consecutive Circlet winner.

After reading through maglor's nominations, it's always good (plus some degree of excitement) to look back those old days (especially the days when I was not in ISML), this is how I'm feeling. By the way, I like your writing maglor. I can feel you were trying to present some excitement or miraculous feeling when writing.

You must know in that match Mikoto ended Kanade's 112 consecutive RS victories. Hell yes Hell yes, even today I want to say that twice. I don't have a particular feeling for Shana's defeating Kanade in the 2011 semi, but for Mikoto's eventual victory in 2013, hell yes! My many thanks to your strong, independent, young female lead.

I'm nominating 3 more.

1) 2012 Amethyst Necklace Match: Shana and Taiga fans messed up the whole affair, and Kuroneko grasped the necklace by a 0.038 points lead.
SpoilerShow
Image
2) 2014 Aquamarine Necklace Match: Mikoto failed to grasp any necklace in 2013 due to her constantly low SDO. Mikoto's re-grasping necklace in 2014 is not surprising, but who ever thought Mikoto would earn her next (also her last) necklace by overturning a 14.727 SDO deficiency, against whom? Kanade.
SpoilerShow
Image
3) 2014 Topaz Necklace Match: Me and my friend multi-voted in 6 airports (my traveling to the US, and his traveling to the UK). When I arrived my university, I was told that we needed 6 more votes. But that was OK, since at least we tried.

I just think necklaces are so important, and NMs usually bring me the most fun in ISML, so 3 more.

Because I was forced to:

2014 Ruby 2: Natsume Rin vs. Shiomiya Shiori, 2125 to 2124
- Rin is my Nova pick, so the victory in addition to a mere 1 vote difference makes this match memorable to me.

2014 Stella Semifinal: Tachibana Kanade vs. Shiina Mashiro, 3440 - 2606
- I like Kanade. I HATE Mashiro. Double win results.

2014 Stella Final: Tachibana Kanade vs. Misaka Mikoto, 3522 - 3503
- Third division victory? Sure, why not?

2014 League Semifinal: Itsuka Kotori vs. Tachibana Kanade 4649 - 4170
- Kotori is shit. But at the same time, my hate for Mashiro is greater than my love for Kanade. Kanade's lost meant Mashiro would not receive Kanade's anti-votes, and thus did not go on to win Tiara. Therefore, in retrospect, great result.
