Featured Match previews/descriptions/teasers for ISML matches are needed every round. Anyone in the community is welcome to contribute in any language. Accepted submissions will be displayed on the front page during the voting round and archived on the site afterwards. You may receive cookies when you submit and/or help edit write-ups.

Archived write-ups can be found here for reference: http://2016.internationalsaimoe.com/con ... _index.php"

Guidelines
  • You must be fair to all candidates involved.
  • Writers have a max total of 5 previews per round.
  • 200-word limit for each Regular Season Female preview, Regular Season Male preview, and 1v1 Exhibition preview, regardless of content or style.
  • 300-word limit for each Exhibition 2v2 preview, due to the pairing of contestants.
  • 450-word limit for each Necklace/Pendant and Necklace/Pendant Exhibition preview.
  • Please use the spelling conventions that ISML uses (e.g. with the macrons ō and ū).
  • Because these will be on the front page, appropriateness and quality of writing are extremely important.
  • Please proofread your work from the perspective of a normal visitor; would he or she understand what you wrote?
  • Try to avoid major plot/character spoilers.
  • Unfortunately, not every submission will be featured.
  • And perhaps MOST IMPORTANT, final revisions of the submissions must be turned in, at the latest, at 5:00 GMT--5 hours before the start of each match.
Tips for Writers
  • Beware of long, cumbersome sentences. While many of them are technically correct, with their commas and conjunctions, they often sound very awkward and become difficult to follow after some length. Try to be considerate of your readers and vary up your sentences' lengths to create regular patterns. Read your works out loud and consider how each sentence sounds.
  • Be very careful of using the same words over and over (example: "girl"), and of using the same sentence structures repeatedly (ex: "Girl A blah blah blah blah blah. On the other hand, Girl B blah blah blah"). Avoid repetition and get creative with your descriptions of the contestants, while still remaining true to their characters.
  • Most of all, try to have fun with your writing! If you find yourself in a slump and using the same style repeatedly with no vigor to your work, then take a break. Maybe read a blog entry or something elsewhere to freshen up your language, then try to write on a clean page. If you're forcing yourself and not having fun, then stop. Come back for the next round. If you're having trouble with something, let us know here and someone or multiple "someones" is/are bound to jump in and aid you.
Post your writings here, and Staff will review and consider them. If you have just ideas, but not whole write-ups, that's okay, too! We can all help each other come up with the best paragraphs to introduce our matches. Thank you for helping to improve ISML!

Aquamarine Day 1

Amano Hina vs Enterprise

Question of sacrifice is something that is forever debated in moral philosophy. Is the sacrifice of one for many justifiable? In this match we have two characters who tried to answer this in their own ways. Amano Hina is "blessed" with a supernatural power that will eventually demand an ultimate sacrifice. Enterprise fights her enemies with reckless abandon. Is a human sacrifice worth the fair weather? How do you balance self-sacrifice with self preservation if you are the greatest weapon against the ultimate enemy? Both characters grapple with these questions, but in end realize that such a decision should not be made alone. Let us take a brief time to think about people who may have made sacrifice for you before taking a vote in this match.

Isla (Plastic Memories) vs. Hayasaka Ai (Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai)
SpoilerShow
Although they may not be rewarded for helping others, it is those who support others from the background who should be recognized the most. Isla understands the pain of seeing those she loves go away. She does her best to alleviate their pain and make them understand that the memories that they made with each other are happy ones to be cherished. Hayasaka Ai has served the Kaguya family for a long time. She always lends a helping hand whenever the family is in need, be it materialistic needs or emotional support. Will either character be able to find the support they need from their fans to win this match?

i dont like macrons. i never will.
fk it, im a noob at writing but this group deserves much attention
Male Group J - The "Group of death"?Show

Out of all the groups that has been drawn so far, Group J of the Male division stands out by having an unusually strong line-up:

Subaru Natsuki - Having barely missed the playoffs last year, Re:Zero's main protagonist is currently benefiting from a popularity boost, no doubt caused by the broadcast of the show's second season. This might be the thing he needs to reach the playoffs this year.

Lelouch Lamperouge - 2011 ISML champion, 2015 Diamond crown winner, and 2016 Tournament of Champions winner. One of the greatest males to grace this contest, the rebellion leader looks to win his second championship.

Yuzuru Otonashi - Two pendants and a semi-final finish in 2017. He is a stalwart member of the Key visual novel faction, and is the main protagonist of Angel Beats!, one of the most emotion-provoking anime shows in modern times.

Willem Kmetsch - One pendant and two playoff appearances. He may seem weak, but his light novel SukaSuka has a sizable amount of support with regards to this contest.

Soma Yukihira - One pendant and one playoff appearance. Once a powerhouse in the mid-2010's, the eponymous chef's strength in this contest is declining due to the poor reception of the manga's latter chapters and its anime adaptations.

The only exception is Giorno Giovanna from JJBA, who got eliminated early last year, and is seemingly set to repeat the same result in this edition. However, given the unpredictable nature of ISML, he cannot be counted out just yet. Who knows, maybe the Golden Dream might just start from here.

Aquamarine Day 2

Yukinoshita Haruno (OreGairu) vs. Aoyama Nanami (Sakura-sō no Pet na Kanojo)
SpoilerShow
The art of exuding an aura of perfection is easy to master, but hard to maintain. To many people, Yukinoshita Haruno has a carefree personality who is able to so anything seamlessly without effort. Behind her bright smile hides a woman who does not trust anyone and yearns to be free from the chains that bind her. Aoyama Nanami works hard to achieve her dreams by working various jobs in order to afford voice acting class. While she tries her best not to show weakness by putting up a proud face, she occasionally stresses out when things do not go as planned no matter how much effort she puts in. Who will be able to realize that it is okay of accept themselves for who they are, flaws and all?
Zero Two (Darling in the FranXX) vs. Suzumiya Haruhi (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu)
SpoilerShow
These two girls work at their own pace and do not follow any rules except their own. Zero Two has little respect for her supervisors and prefers to carve her own path. She does not beat around the bush; she expresses her opinions openly with little regard to the consequences of her words. Suzumiya Haruhi's infectious personality allows her to make her ideas come to light. She will never give up until things go her way, and she will see her plans until the end to make sure they satisfy her bottomless desire for the extraordinary. Can Zero Two overpower her opponent with her desire to understand the human mind, or will Haruhi's unorthodox lifestyle and mannerisms take her to greater heights?

Catarina vs. ArisaShow
It is been a long time but a person must care for others even in the midst of hardships in life. And this is why Catarina fits well, since because of her experience during her previous life, she must avoid all circumstances that will lead to an unexpected demise and meeting new friends along the way. On the other part, Arisa must do what it takes to be the member of the band lead by Kasumi while overcoming the obstacles she faced, all thanks to the ones she cared about. And when this day ends, will either one stand out against the adversity and overcome the obstacle and lead to finding a new life? Well, this story will soon connect to the future.

@lordzymeth Because it is just two people fighting it out, is it possible to trim your write up to around 200 and under? It is currently at about 250. If you need assistance in trimming it out, I would be happy to help.

@RichardJoash I'm curious to know what "that" is referring to in the first sentence: "It is been a long time after that." Is it life or hardships? It sounds like it is referencing some other word or description that may not be clear after reading the entry. Because words like "this" or "that" are open-ended, a reader who has not watched either or neither of the two series may not know what you are referring to.

No idea if my wording is good or not, but better than nothing.
Oreki Hōtarō vs. Hikigaya HachimanShow
If there are only two famous boys in our lovely Saimoe world, who they are? One boy has an outstanding insight and a large scale of deductive ability. Another boy has an unsurpassed achievement of liberal arts and always lost for mathematics. One is interested in saving energy, he don't do anything that has no need to do, and do simply and simply on something has to do. Another has a black history of alone from childhood, and usually asks and answeres by himself via brain-teasers, hence he hates all tender girls. One has no interests in all school societies but still joined the department of classic and helps their members very carefully on detective. Another has isolated himself from many peoples, not because of scars but their nature, however he can disclose their sadness to their serving funs. They are Hōtarō and Hachiman, an environmental protector and a goddess teacher. Now, will the scepter more green, or more proud?

Archer (Fate Series) vs. Ishigami Senkū (Dr.STONE)
SpoilerShow
Perhaps a methodical approach is the best way to turn a situation around. Archer believes that the best way to get to the Holy Grail is one where the odds are on his favor. If that means siding with enemy forces because they have a higher collateral than his allies, he will switch sides to achieve his goals. Ishigami Senkū may not have the stamina to survive an apocalyptic world, but he has the intelligence to pull through in any situation. If outsmarting his opponents and creating technology will help him survive this new environment, he will do whatever it takes to restore humanity. Who will be able to outsmart their opponent and come away with the victory?
Tomori Nao (Charlotte) vs. Furuhashi Fumino (Bokutachi wa Benkyō ga Dekinai)
SpoilerShow
When one sees a shooting star, what does one wish for? Fame? Fortune? Happiness? For Tomori Nao, her wish may be to trust others once again. After a terrible incident befell her brother, Nao despised all who were associated with the tragedy. When she joined the student council, she vowed to protect those who, like her, have supernatural powers to prevent situations that occurred with her brother from happening again. For Furuhashi Fumino, it is to become an astronomer. Fumino's strong desire to understand stars stem from her deceased mother. She may not be knowledgeable in science and mathematics, but she will do whatever it takes to make her dream come true, even if it meant relying on a tutor she hides her feelings from. When they see the falling star, will either Nao's or Fumino's wish come true?

Nakano Azusa vs Sakura Chiyo
SpoilerShow
How does it feel to be the sane one in your less-than-typical group of schoolmates? At least, Nakano Azusa may just consider that her toughest responsibility. Beside constantly dragging the band back to practice, she has to deal with a loud and mischievous drummer, a sweet and way too easygoing keyboardist, and a notoriously lazy guitarist who often took advantage of the latter to slack off. Sakura Chiyo would not have that any easier, however. When she isn't dragged into manga assisting by the one totally oblivious to her feelings, Chiyo often finds herself dealing with her troublemaker friend's quirky antics, or with that certain drama club's duo who almost always ends up in violence. But if they were ever offered a chance to trade those groups of theirs with something else, the answer would obviously be a no. Before they even realized, Azusa and Chiyo have been a constant part of their groups, resulting in the exciting and unforgettable days of school-life they'd never even imagined. Now as the two voices of reason stand against each other, which one shall soar more loudly and clearly than the other?

Nakano Azusa (K-ON!) vs. Sakura Chiyo (Gekkan Shōjo Nozaki-kun)
SpoilerShow
How does it feel to be the sane one in your atypical group of schoolmates? At least, Nakano Azusa may consider that her toughest responsibility. Besides constantly dragging the band back to practice, she has to deal with a loud and mischievous drummer, a sweet and very easygoing keyboardist, and a notoriously lazy guitarist who often takes advantage of the latter to slack off. However, Sakura Chiyo does not have it any easier. When she isn't dragged into manga assisting by the one totally oblivious to her feelings, Chiyo often finds herself either dealing with her troublesome friend's quirky antics or caught in a certain drama club duo’s ruckus, which almost always ends in violence. However, if they were ever offered a chance to trade their group with something else, the answer will obviously be “no”. Before they even realized, Azusa and Chiyo have become a constant part of their group, resulting in exciting and unforgettable days of school life they'd never imagined. Special thanks to WoodyMC, liuxinyu970226, and Momento10 for contributing today's match previews

@WoodyMC Great write-up. I think there were some wordy phrases here or there that can easily be summarized into one word. For example, "less than typical" can easily be reduced to "atypical". If you are elongating the words/phrases on purpose, let me know so I can keep that in mind. I try to keep the style of the writer as close as possible to the original when I edit the matches.

@liuxinyu970226 Thanks for the write-up. Couple of confusing word choices here and there, but it is a good write up. Let me know if you have any questions with how I edited your work.

We leave the decision mostly to the artists. If someone wants to submit one, we will take a look at it and consider it.

It was usually mostly those factors that been considered past years:

Is the match interesting (either supposedly close or two chara have a link between em)
Do both characters have good material to make a poster (girl like Jibril for example don't have much official pictures)
Do both characters may look good together on same poster
Trying avoid repeat too much characters, so putting characters that have no MOTD poster yet on it.

Now it also depends about the write-up since we're back to having some again.

Ishigami Yū (Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai) vs Akasaka Ryūnosuke (Sakura-sō no Pet na Kanojo)
SpoilerShow
Trust is something that must be earned, not to be given away so easily. Ishigami Yū's sharp tongue and straightforward attitude has made many classmates and acquaintances shun him. He even uses his hair to cover his face when taking to others. However, all of this actions are a defense mechanism. He does not want to experience the same pain that he did in the past, so he pushes everyone away on purpose. Akasaka Ryūnosuke holes himself in his room, only going to class sporadically to meet the required attendance record. He mainly uses as AI to do most of the talking for him and prefers not to interact with anyone, if possible. Because of his troubled past, he is afraid of becoming closer to others. Therefore, he chooses to stay away from them, so nothing will happen in the first place. Will either Yū or Ryūnosuke find it in their hearts to accept people into their lives?
Illyasviel von Einzbern (Fate Series) vs Nakano Nino (5-tōbun no Hanayome)
SpoilerShow
Beware their tender smiles; they hide their mischievous minds. Illyasviel von Einzbern may be a child to many eyes; however, she is the master of one of the greatest heroes known to man. Her cold eyes do not understand mercy; her stone heart, forgiveness. She will stop at nothing to take the Holy Grail so she can exact revenge to the one who left her all alone. Nakano Nino treasures the bonds she has made with her siblings. To prevent them from faltering, she will use any means necessary to dispose potential threats from ruining their relationship. Any method is fair game as long as she and her siblings are able to continue to spend their youthful days with each other. Who will be able to outwit her opponent once the dust settles?
