Captcha Announcement

Post by Chocola » Thu May 01, 2014 3:48 am

Starting Aquamarine 8,

Your vote will still be submitted even if the captcha is wrong, so make sure your answer is correct before you submit.

This is done on purpose and is not a technical limitation of any kind.

EDIT: The reason why we do not use the obelus (÷) is because it may be mistaken for a plus sign on a small phone.

So as long as we respond to the captcha in some way, the vote is submitted?

Then even the math-impared would be able to answer maglor's question.

I think it's pretty obvious it will be submitted but not counted. That means you won't be able to place a legit vote from that IP.

Given the difficulty of the question I was presented with, that would mean that there will probably be very few legit votes this round if that's true. Captcha is used to determine if there's an actual human behind the vote, so anything other than a null should be able to answer the question. If it was just that the IP is invalid, the ones who use other means to submit multiple votes would just keep on going and find another IP to vote with regardless.

I think the picture was probably the best solution to the problem in any case. It needed an intelligent response and wasn't focused on knowing certain rules. If a 3-year-old wanted to vote, they could probably get the right answer to the picture, but not likely to a math problem like what was presented.

I think the reason is to prevent bot usage and people who were trying to use those bots wouldn't even be able to place their normal votes. I get the feeling it wasn't hard to brute force through previous captcha. After all it was just 1 in 4 chance after you taught the bot to choose random answer (I assume one could write such script?). Now it's impossible. Not that I know anything about it, I'm just saying what in my opinion seems possible for someone with skills. I bet the staff will be able to provide better answer as they should know the subject at least to some extent. Yeah, this method shouldn't have much of an impact on people voting from different IPs.

Correct. Pick first option.

while (answer is incorrect) refresh/reset, pick first option again

submit

In summary

If we give feedback whether the answer is right or wrong, a bot can just test numbers from 1 to 100 until the answer is correct. This takes milliseconds. Before you say we could increase the range of correct answers, our math problem needs to be simple enough so the answer falls into the 1-100 integer range.

Lastly, math is universal. There's no need to translate any instructions. Right now most people 12+ (99% of our voters) can do these math problems mentally in less than 5 seconds, so this is our best option.

The trigonometry I could probably do after a refresher. You can forget about the calculus, though.
