Post by Hachiko » Wed Oct 31, 2012 3:29 am

Image The 2012–13 UEFA Champions League is the 58th season of Europe's premier club football tournament organised by UEFA, and the 21st season since it was renamed from the European Champion Clubs' Cup to the UEFA Champions League.

The final will be played at Wembley Stadium in London, England. This is in recognition of 150 years since the formation of the English Football Association, the world's oldest football association. This is the seventh occasion Wembley Stadium (current and old) has hosted the Champions League final. Chelsea are the defending champions.

A total of 76 teams will participate in the 2012–13 Champions League, from 52 UEFA associations (Liechtenstein organises no domestic league competition). Associations are allocated places according to their 2011 UEFA country coefficients, which takes into account their performance in European competitions from 2006–07 to 2010–11.
Below is the qualification scheme for the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League:

Associations 1–3 each have four teams qualify
Associations 4–6 each have three teams qualify
Associations 7–15 each have two teams qualify
Associations 16–53 each have one team qualify (excluding Liechtenstein)

As Chelsea, winners of the 2011–12 UEFA Champions League, finished outside the top four of the 2011–12 Premier League, and because of the restriction that no association can have more than four teams playing in the Champions League, Chelsea's entry in the 2012–13 UEFA Champions League as the title holder came at the expense of Tottenham Hotspur, the fourth-placed team of the 2011–12 Premier League (which entered the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League instead).

Tottenham Hotspur were due to enter the Champions League play-off round for non-champions, but instead entered the Europa League because Chelsea won the Champions League the previous season. The draw for the group stage was held in Monaco on 30 August 2012.[14] The 32 teams were allocated into four pots based on their 2012 UEFA club coefficients, with the title holders, Chelsea, being placed in Pot 1 automatically. They were drawn into eight groups of four, with the restriction that teams from the same association cannot be drawn against each other.

In each group, teams will play against each other home-and-away in a round-robin format. The matchdays will be 18–19 September, 2–3 October, 23–24 October, 6–7 November, 20–21 November, and 4–5 December 2012. The group winners and runners-up will advance to the round of 16, while the third-placed teams will enter the round of 32 of the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League.

A total of 17 national associations are represented in the group stage. Montpellier, Nordsjælland and Málaga are set to make their debut appearances in the group stage.

Each group contains one team from each of the four pots, with the restriction that teams from the same national association cannot be drawn against each other. Moreover, the draw is controlled for teams from the same association in order to split the teams evenly into the two sets of groups (A–D, E–H) for maximum television coverage.
The fixtures are decided after the draw. On each matchday, four groups play their matches on Tuesday, while the other four groups play their matches on Wednesday, with the two sets of groups (A–D, E–H) alternating between each matchday. There are other restrictions, e.g., teams from the same city (e.g. Manchester United and Manchester City) in general do not play at home on the same matchday (UEFA tries to avoid teams from the same city playing at home on the same day or on consecutive days), and Russian teams do not play at home on the last matchday due to cold weather.

If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:
  • higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;
    superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;
    higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question;
    higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question;
    If, after applying criteria 1) to 4) to several teams, two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1) to 4) are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the two teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 6) to 8) apply;
    superior goal difference from all group matches played;
    higher number of goals scored from all group matches played;
    higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as its association, over the previous five seasons.
