Post by Hachiko » Wed Jul 11, 2018 11:42 am

The 2018 NCAA Division I FBS football season is the highest level of college football competition in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 2018. The regular season will begin on August 30, 2018 and is scheduled to end on December 8, 2018. The postseason (aside from all-star games that will follow) will conclude on January 7, 2019 with the College Football Playoff National Championship in Santa Clara. Game rules
The following rule changes were approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel for the 2018 season:
SpoilerShow
Allow players to fair catch the ball inside the 25 yard line on a kickoff and be awarded a touchback, placing the ball at the 25 yard line.
Offensive players cannot block below the waist more than five yards past the line of scrimmage and, with the exception of interior linemen, all blocks below the waist must be from the front.
The play clock will be set to 40 seconds between a touchdown and the PAT or two-point conversion and after a kickoff.
Mirroring the NFL rule adopted in the 2010 season, a 10-second runoff will be applied within the final minute of each half if a replay review overturns the call on the field, and the correct ruling would not have stopped the game clock. As with any other 10 second runoff, teams can take a time out (if available) to avoid the runoff.
Extending the "no leaping" rule on PATs and field goals adopted in the 2017 season to include the "shield" on a punt.
Allowing penalties incurred on successful field goals to be enforced on the ensuing kickoff, same as is done for successful extra point attempts.
Continuing the experiment of a collaborative instant replay decision making model not confined to the press box.

Updated stadiums
Louisville – The Cardinals will debut a 10,000-seat expansion of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, specifically the filling in of the north end zone, which brings the capacity to 65,000. Two new video scoreboards are also set to be installed.[2]
Arizona State is expecting to complete its four-phase renovation of Sun Devil Stadium. The fourth and final phase, scheduled for completion prior to the 2018 season, includes reconstruction of the east sideline. The new capacity will be 55,000, down from 71,706 from an expansion in 1977.[3]
Georgia will debut its $63 million new west end zone project at Sanford Stadium, which will relocate the locker room from the east side to the west side, as well as the addition of a new plaza and recruiting pavilion. It will add 500 seats to the stadium's capacity.
Arkansas will debut its $160 million expansion of the north end zone of Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. The expansion will add 4,800 seats and new premium seating to the north end zone, boosting the capacity of the stadium from 76,000 (with south end zone top bleachers) to 80,800.
Iowa is currently rebuilding the north end zone of Kinnick Stadium. The $89.9 million upgrade will feature the addition of box seating, outdoor club seating and a new scoreboard. Some seating will open for the 2018 season, while the entire project is scheduled to be complete in 2019.
Indiana will debut its $50 million south end zone complex at Memorial Stadium. The project will include: a new rehabilitation and treatment facility for athletes, additional academic and life skills support facilities, a "multi-use" outdoor terrace on the roof of the structure, an entry plaza and green space at the south end of the stadium. A new 20 x 68 foot video board was installed in the North Endzone for the 2017 season, with a 42 x 91.3 foot video board excepted to be installed for the 2018 season in the completed south end zone.
Renamed stadiums
One school announced a naming rights deal for its stadium. Colorado State announced on April 19, 2018 that an area financial institution, Public Service Credit Union, had paid $37.7 million over 15 years to place its name on the venue then known as Colorado State Stadium. The new stadium name was not revealed at that time because PSCU was in the process of changing its name, with the new name expected to be announced in June 2018. The deal did not affect the playing surface, which continues to be named after former Rams head coach Sonny Lubick.[4] On June 5, the former PSCU announced its new name of Canvas Credit Union, with the CSU venue becoming Canvas Stadium

Image The AAC is a good league, easily the best of the Group of 5 in football and, for the last three seasons (per Ken Pomeroy), one of the seven best basketball conferences in Division I as well. For those coming from the old Conference USA — ECU, Houston, Memphis, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, UCF (plus former indie Navy) — it’s meant opportunity and prestige.

Image Of the 21 new FBS head coaches last year, Edsall faced maybe the most obvious Year Zero situation. Others ended up burning their two-deeps to the ground and starting over — Baylor’s Matt Rhule, Minnesota’s PJ Fleck, Cincinnati’s Luke Fickell — but for Edsall, there was nowhere to go but up.

Image Memphis’ first play of the game against ECU was an 89-yard touchdown pass. The Tigers’ next drive featured gains of 11, 14, 11, 16, and 14 yards before a four-yard score. In their next drive — which followed a pick six that had put them up 21-0 — they needed just three plays to move into ECU territory, then scored on a 46-yard pass.

Memphis was up 28-0 at the end of the first quarter, having gained 233 yards in just 16 plays. It didn’t get much better. In 33 plays over the final three quarters, the Tigers gained another 402 yards and scored another six touchdowns. ECU gained 466 yards and lost by 57 points.

It was that kind of year in Greenville.

Image In the end, I was okay with UCF not getting a Playoff semifinal bid in 2017. The Knights were, on paper, a top-10 team and spent most of the first half of the season playing at a top-five level. But only four teams make the CFP, and Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Clemson were all awesome — three of the four finished ahead of UCF in the year-end S&P+ rankings, and the one that didn’t (Clemson) was the CFP’s top seed.

Image Houston went 13-1 in 2015, then rose to sixth in the country with a 5-0 start in 2016. With head coach Tom Herman, five-star recruit Ed Oliver, and a roster full of athletes ready to make a statement, the Cougars were close to completely changing their lot in life.

Image We could be witnessing the birth of a fully realized Memphis football program. According to the 247Sports Composite, Norvell just signed the second-best class in the conference, a year after signing the third-best. He inherited a large base of athleticism, and he’s building on it. And in his first year in succeeding Memphis’ most successful coach in a generation, he maybe have improved the product.

Justin Fuente will always be known as the guy who got Memphis off the ground, but there’s a chance Fuente’s success was only the beginning. This is a good time to be a Memphis Tigers fan.

Image Navy’s doing just fine in the AAC. We’ll start with that. All the concerns about how teams would get up to speed at defending Ken Niumatalolo’s triple option: poppycock, as predicted here.

In 2017, the Midshipmen’s third year in the league, they had two quarterbacks rush for 1,000 yards. They took down an upstart Tulane, outlasted SMU in a track meet, wiped the floor with Virginia in a bowl, and beat Lane Kiffin’s FAU by 23. With the option as their id, they ranked 10th in rushing success rate and sixth in standard-downs success rate.

Image I think they made an amazing hire in terms of fit. Sonny Dykes was a P5-quality who got into a situation that — like, he made a bad move in going to Cal and just sort of didn’t know it.

I think it works really well for his connections in Texas, the offense he runs, the coaches he can attract, and his ability to recruit. I think for SMU it makes really, really good sense. And he also doesn’t have to go through the grittier part of the rebuilding process because his predecessor did all that.

Image Each year in December, a sports radio host, columnist, or whatever takes the time to scoff at the number of 6-6 teams in bowls, the ridiculous bowl sponsorships, or some other (admittedly silly) aspect of college football’s postseason, and either proposes getting rid of them altogether (usually with some sort of NFL-style playoff expansion) or hearkens a return to the day when men were men and there were only about 15 bowls. They rage against bonus football. They try to remove the modest goals of rising programs.

I’m going to assume there weren’t tons of Too Many Bowls folks around Tulane last year. Since that amazing, out-of-nowhere run to 12-0 and a top-10 finish in 1998 — 20 years ago this fall — the Green Wave have bowled twice and finished above .500 three times.

Image It is one of college football’s laws: teams that were good or bad one year are likely to be good or bad the next. But when you’re based in Oklahoma and call yourself the Golden Hurricane, laws of nature don’t really apply.

Tulsa has a fear of commitment. In 86 years of top-division football, the Golden Hurricane have won at least eight games 25 times and three or fewer 20 times. In just this century, they’ve gone 2-10 or worse four times and 10-4 or better five times. Their win total has changed by at least four games in four of the last five years: 11-3, 3-9, 2-10, 6-7, 10-3, 2-10.

Image Despite the tradition, Howard’s Rock, the Death Valley moniker, heavy attendance, a brilliant recruiting base (two and a half hours from both Atlanta and Charlotte), and that lovely shade of orange, Clemson was long either the prototype underachiever or the prototype for delusions of grandeur.

Image The FSU ship might have eventually righted, had Jimbo Fisher stayed in Tallahassee. Toward the end of 2017, things had improved.

The Seminoles’ 2017 was defined by injury, youth, and staleness. Fisher had labored through 2016 with a redshirt freshman quarterback (Deondre Francois), and just as he was set to take advantage of that experience, Francois was lost for the season in the first game, so Fisher went through 2017 with a true freshman (James Blackman).
