Favorite Anime BGM

Post by loudmouth » Tue Aug 24, 2010 3:12 am

Background Music. What's your favorite anime background music? I guess inserts count if they're playing behind a scene (like anything Hitomi does during code geass for example) but I won't say any right now. Whether or not you know the name of the song doesn't really matter since it might be kinda hard to find.

In no particular order:
Angel Beats!: SSS Theme - starts off with soft piano, then suddenly plays the same thing at a faster tempo with strings. Really exciting piece.

Clannad: The place where wishes come true (After Story version) The song playing in the sunflower field. That scene was probably easily the most memorable one of the series, it deserved nothing less than the best piece on the soundtrack, and it was the only moment that the piece really could have been played for. (more in the toradora part)

Death Note: L's theme - the first time this plays is in ep 2 (when you first meet L) it starts off soft and mysterious while he's explaining what he did, then the guitar kicks in when you realize exactly what happened (it's ep 2 but I don't want to spoil anything just in case because it's awesome)

Toradora: Lost My Pieces - the sad toradora music. it's really pretty. Something interesting about it is that it's used at practically every heart-wrenching scene in the series, but it fits perfectly every time. It's the opposite with Clannad. In the case of Clannad, when it plays "The Place Where Wishes Come True" when they're in the sunflower field, you had heard the song a few times already, but only the first part. When the second part kicks in...wow...but that's the only time in the series that it plays I think. There was a certain connection between that moment and the music that made the music unique to that moment. (muh muh muh muh) There probably wasn't any other time that they even could have played it. Back to Toradora though, Lost My Pieces is a beautiful song, and it fits perfectly with the scenes. So there.

I'll probably think of more but that's all for now I guess

"pure snows" from Kanon 2006; the places where it was used were emotional high points of the episodes.

The piano version the the Bakmonogatari end used in episode 12 added to the scene and increased the emotional impact. :D

I can normally appreciate music slightly better than my 7-year-old cousin can (read: I never pay any attention to BGMs), but occasionally I come across tracks so good that even I can't help but take notice of them. Here are some of my favorites:

- Mushishi: Umi Sakai (Unasaka) Yori
- Spirited Away: Day of the River
- Clannad: Distant Years
- Sora no Woto: Servante du feu

And, er, if I can include BGM from visual novels too:

- Tomoyo After: rivulet [piano]
- Ever17: Der Mond Das Meer
- Narcissu: Scarlet
- Planetarian: Gentle Jena

Here's some more from Angel Beats! because it's awesome

Decisive Battle - really chaotic piano. It's kinda hard to follow but the feeling of chaos worked pretty well
Worthy Rival - Bam! This one sounds weird. If you watched Angel Beats you'll probably know which one I'm talking about (or at least recognize it instantly) I guess I like it for the same reason as decisive battle.
Invention - because it's epic. It's the music they play with guild
My Heart - Piano and strings version of "My Soul, Your Beats." I don't know, I have a thing for soft piano versions of the opening song. Especially a song that I liked in the first place. Speaking of which:
My Most Precious Treasure - Piano only version of "Ichiban no Takaramono." My favorite thing about Angel Beats, and this is no understatement by any means (I thought it was a great show), was the very last song, Ichiban no Takaramono. I personally prefer the one with the vocals, but the piano version is still really good.
Kanade - The song called Kanade. Its pretty yet epic
Otonashi - another version of the SSS theme

I suppose that listening to music on the floor, right? If that's the case, I would say Clannad, Eureka Seven, and I swore that I had in mind a third, but I forgot.

Only a very few others that can really make me feel the music like these two more souls costs. Normally Thurs supported me, but most of the works of these two really brought the life and music has added a new layer that shows Entirely Could there are many other composers.

So I'm watching Clannad again. Back when I was watching Angel Beats it was one of my favorite soundtracks ever, but I didn't want to say anything like "It's the best soundtrack I've ever heard in my life" because it's not. It's hard to tell what "better" really is, but after watching a few episodes of Clannad I have decided that I like Clannad much more than Angel Beats! There's so many different tracks (3 CDs) and there isn't a single one I don't like, so I'll just name a few favorites

The Place Where Wishes Come True II
To the Same Heights
Illusions
Spring Wind (piano)
Ushio
Nagisa
The Palm of a Small Hand
Two Shadows
Roaring Tides II
Shining in the Sky
Snowfield
Dumb
Phases of the Moon
White Clovers
Country Train
Country Lane

To name a few =P

Current favorites:

To Aru Majutsu No Index -
Onakasuita
Usually played whenever Index is hungry, or when something funny is about to happen (usually ending with Touma saying, "Such misfortune!"). Also used once in episode 13 of Railgun (the pseudo-beach episode where Kuroko wears that "barely-there" swimsuit).

Initial D -
Black Out - Overload
Beat of The Rising Sun - Dave Rodgers
- Both played during Takumi's battle with Ryosuke and his Mazda FC3S RX7.
Speedy Speed Boy - Marko Polo
- Played when Takumi races Kyouichi and his Lancer Evo III for the first time...
SpoilerShow
Which later turns out to be a Heroic BSOD moment for Takumi.
Trigun -
Yellow Alert
A fast-paced piece which plays whenever Vash The Stampede is about to do something awesome (without killing anyone).
Never Could Have Been Worse
A slow piece that gives the show that "space western" feel.

Obligatory "Umineko no naku koro ni OST is awesome" post

of course not limited to just the anime, not that it didn't have pretty good tracks, but the sound novel's bgm is far superior, Mirage Coordinator, Worldend Dominator, kuina, and black liliana to name a few. I guess it would be pretty unspectacular if a sound novel didn't have a pretty good BGM set, and it certainly is part of the novels appeal

Hum... I really appreciate BGM. It adds a lot to some scenes.
I have many that I absolutely love I had to choose a top 3 songs it would be:
"Unmei no Yoru" - Fate/Stay Night OST
"Unjust Life" - Angel Beats OST
"Contractor" - Pandora Hearts OST

Even though those are my favorites I can say I love pretty much anything composed by Yuki Kajiura. I'm a big fan of her work.

Oh, and I know this is from a game but it's my favorite instrumental piece: "Battle for Everyone's Souls" - Persona 3 OST.

I have to say KEY studio did a very very good job on BGM.
e.g.:

I guess the most impressive BGM I've ever seen/heard is "Kanashimi no Mukou e" from School Days.

It's really a tough moment which is emphasized by this great song.
