Amagami SS

Post by Elvinsky » Wed Dec 08, 2010 1:51 pm

So...we're halfway through the Tsukasa arc (as of this post) and better late than never, so here's a thread for Amagami SS. (Though the various manga adaptations and the PS2 game can also be discussed here as well.)

Anyway, Tsukasa's quite an interesting character... Her initial facade takes the best tsundere qualities of Yui Kotegawa (thanks to Kaori Nazuka also providing the voice-over), but adds a good dose of a domineering streak. Of course, once she gets into honest-to-goodness dere mode, I'm expecting a good amount of "HNNNNGGGG" moments. Can't wait to see how the arc turns out.

Still, feel free to discuss the trolling of Rihoko's arc, the awesomeness of Kaoru's hair, how Ai is love, Sae's moe-worthy cuteness (and buxomness), the "cool big sis" aura of Haruka and of course, Miya and her ear-wormy laugh (Nishishishi!)... Not to mention the side characters that you also find attractive anyway. (*cough*HibikiTsukahara*cough*)

And did I mention that there is also a hidden girl who will also get her own OAV-only arc? (But I suppose some of you know that already.)

Episode 24 is up, and being the last episode of Tsukasa's arc, I'm just glad they somehow ended it on a high note. And the best thing is that there's even a preview for the next arc.
SpoilerShow
Risa Kamizaki, a.k.a.: Junichi's yandere stalker
So yeah, I ought to marathon the whole thing even if Risa's arc isn't around yet... Also, did anyone else follow the show? Speak up!

I won't bite. Promise. ;)

Yeah I follow the show, but TBH most of it felt boring to me until Ayatsuji's arc came along. Awesome final boss is definitely awesome, not to mention her conflict and character development is simply leagues better than the other girls'. Though to be fair, Haruka's arc wasn't boring so much as... mindblowing, I guess?

Overall, I'd give the series a 7.8.

I agree, Tsukasa's arc was defiantly the best arc out of the six. I hope to see her here.

Well, let's just say that I wanted to see what each of the girls arcs had to offer... "Taste the rainbow," so to speak...

Haruka - Despite my bias against older girls (stemming from a bad experience from RL -- long story for another time), I was quite pleased with how the arc turned out. Maybe it's because of Shizuka Itou's excellent voice work, or maybe because her end is quite faithful to the original dating sim. ("Lover's End," no less!) Now her arc didn't exactly change my opinion about dating older girls, but encourages the notion that not all girls who are older than the guy are manipulative types...maybe.

Kaoru - It was only after I heard about fans giving her the nickname "Sex Hair" that I became interested in seeing her arc (and after seeing what she looks like for myself, her nickname really does fit). Tsundere done right (with a dash of "touchy-feely teasing") is always nice to watch, and being voiced by Rina Sato is also a bonus. Her family problem also brings some depth to her and Junichi's relationship development.

Sae - While I'm biased against being in a relationship with an older girl, I definitely have a soft spot for younger girls. More so if they are cute shrinking violets that need help getting out of their shell. Well, I didn't expect a lemony narrator, lampshade hanging, and fourth wall breaking from Junichi, but I guess it was understandable since Sae's shyness prevents her from taking the initiative (at first). The ending could have been better (though hopefully the Blu-Rays/DVDs will fix that), but otherwise okay.

Ai - Ai's arc could be considered a darkhorse for me since never did I imagine that I would like it so much! (Second only to Tsukasa, of course.) She looks cold on the outside and is quite assertive when you go too far, but get on good terms with her and her deredere side is so damn sweet! It helps that all her endings in the game (even her "Bad End") all end up with her still having feelings for Junichi. I didn't expect to root for her character, but I like her anyway. And the hot springs confession was just...HNNNNNNGGGGGG!

Rihoko - Well, I did plan on skipping her arc in favor of the next, but gave it a chance and found her to be quite cute...in an innocent, ditzy sweet kind of way. (The story being told from her perspective is also an interesting viewpoint.) But if Sae's arc didn't follow the "Lover's End" faithfully, Rihoko's arc got it worse. All that build-up and it ends without clinching that they're an official couple, despite going way past Christmas. (Again, hopefully the Blu-Rays/DVDs will fix that.)

Tsukasa - Easily my favorite out of the arcs, as I've been fanboying in my previous entries. For some reason I can somehow relate to her cynical POV of people and understand her...need to be loved despite her facade trying to hide it. I guess the emotional ups and downs of Tsukasa's arc made it all the more heartwarming in the end.

Here's my opinion about each character:
HarukaShow
Admiration slowly envelops to love as Jun'ichi, who at first gets along with her because it was an honor for guys to be around the school idol, actualy starts to get feelings for her. In truth, Haruka was actually alone in her household with no one to be around with other than Hibiki on her cell phone. Jun'ichi only realizs how in need she was when he was invited to visit her place at the end of the arc. The ending of the arc was quite cute as well, seeing as to how lovey-dovey they are. A decent upperclassman route; liked her arc. However, her personality was what casted me awry. She is a creepy peeper and a bit ... daring? for me.
KaoruShow
A middle school friend that usually seen teasing Jun'ichi in a "romantic" way, Kaoru and Jun'ichi originally see each other as bad-blood friends who so happen to get along despite every day awkwardness. When her mother started to see someone else, Kaoru was in shock, thinking that she is of no importance to her now that she is looking for another man. Jun'ichi gave her the courage to be ale to speak out her true feelings about the family problem, turning the "just friends" relationship into one of actual romance. Again, another decent arc: the middle school friend. I can picture myself being around Kaoru as a friend. Belly-button kissing scene was a plus for me.
SaeShow
What I did not like about her arc was the narrator that is describing the events; then again, I guess it makes sense, since her personality is quiet and shy. Perverted as any male, Jun'ichi first attraction to her was her bust size. To make her more open, Jun'ichi starts a training camp for her to be more open to others, and what better way than to have her work part-time in a maid cafe. As the training progresses, Sea developed feelings for Jun'ichi and, for the first time, tells him that she does not want him to see her as just a person in need of training. By the end of the arc, their love was confirmed, but I did not like how it was portrayed. The quiet girl arc was not that great, in my opinion, which in turn, ruined my view of her.
AiShow
A simple arc of a girl who shuns her upperclassman due to a bad first impression, but later develops feelings for her in the end. A girl who takes swimming seriously, Ai was surprised that she was not able to participate in the team even through her hard work. At most times, the is seen frustrated and flustered. In days when she is calm, Ai can actually be sweet, from wanting to buy a toy for her younger brother to working at the Founder Festival for the Swim Club despite quarrels with them. I like Ai, but her cool girl arc was not as great as I would like want it to be. While Jun'ichi calls her Ai, i would have wanted Ai to call him by his first name, but it did not occur. And then, there was the scene with an open-air hot spring in the middle of nowhere.
RihokoShow
An interesting aspect of this arc that caught my attention was that the arc was portrayed in her point of view rather than Junichi. A childhood friend with a childhood crush, Rihoko spends most of her time figuring out how to properly say her love to Jun'ichi. Other times, she is seen eating food even though she claims to be on a diet every time. What is interesting is that Jun'ichi's advice and remarks are what influences her motives and actions. What I dislike about how the ending is set is that even after Christmas and in their senior term, Rihoko and Jun'ichi are never mutually in love, and it continues to be a one-sided love relationship. I like Rihoko for her ditsy and bubbly personality, but I dislike her arc: the childhood friend route.
TsukasaShow
I love this girl and love her arc: the class president route. Normally seen as a caring and considerate person, this is her facade of her true personality, which is manipulative, impulsive, and sly. This split personality was caused my a simple event; the realization that Santa does not exist. To attempt to be the Santa of everyone's lives, Tsukasa puts on her nice face in front of her classmates and tries to act accordingly without revealing her true personality. Of course, this failed when she misunderstood the scene in which Jun'ichi was reading a particular section of her notebook that she did not wish to be seen by her peers. Jun'ichi agrees to keep her bipolar personality a secret, thus is the only one that knows about this. After a series of incidents regarding the two, Tsukasa becomes more open to Jun'ichi; in return, Jun'ichi develops feelings for her. In my opinion, the way the arc ended was the best out of the six.

Watched episode 25 today...

If Amagami SS has a Crowning Moment of Funny, the scenes where Risa shot down Junichi's other potential relationships (and the girls' various reactions) would definitely be it... Though if I were to choose the funniest among them, it would be:
SpoilerShow
Risa's reaction to Tsukasa's true personality after showing the latter a (doctored) pic with Junichi and another girl. Note that Risa showed the same pic to Haruka, Kaoru, Sae, Ai and Rihoko in order to discourage them from going out with Junichi -- and it was those girls who had various reactions. But Tsukasa showing her true personality to Risa was unexpected and amusing to watch.
I'd definitely consider Risa a one-episode wonder. It's amazing how the backstory and relationship development would all be resolved in just one episode...and despite her rather underhanded methods to get Junichi, she still ends up being a likable character somehow.

*sigh* If only they also put that much love for Sae and Rihoko's arcs... Oh well... Looks like I'll have to revise my arc rankings then.

Amagami Endings

SpoilerShow
Each girl has 4 endings and 1 ignored epilogue.

Best End (in the original pasta, Lovers End): Activated when you ask a girl who's in love with you on a Christmas date.

Good End (in the original pasta, Good or Best Friends End): Activated when you ask a girl who's on good terms with you on a Christmas date.

Normal End: Activated when you ask two girls who're in love with you on a Christmas date, and you go out with this girl instead of the other.

Bad End: Activated when you ask two girls you're in love with you on a Christmas date, and you go out with the other girl instead of this one. The girl will wait in the cold for you, not knowing you won't come.

Ignored Epilogue: You ignore all girls and have Umehara tell you what she's up to.

---

Morishima Haruka - Popular girl who rejects every boy who confesses to her. Part of her story (and her appeal) will be getting to know her despite being rejected and being her cute kouhai (she likes cute things).

Best End: Morishima reserves a hotel room on the pretext that Tachibana will be meeting her parents. Her parents aren't there. She takes a shower and comes out in a towel. She's flustered about Tachibana not peeping or why he hasn't confessed again despite having confessed twice (and getting shot down both times). She tells him that she's so in love with him that she can't think straight anymore. Tachibana smiles and tells her that the clumsy senpai he got to know is the senpai he fell in love with. Morishima tells him to call her Haruka and they share a passionate kiss, while her towel falls off. Sex is strongly implied. A few years later, Tachibana becomes a police detective and Morishima is his loving waifu.

In Morishima's best end, when she comes out in a towel, she yells at Tachibana. Why didn't he peep? Isn't that what all guys do? She rejected him twice, why didn't he confess again? She's so in love with him that she can't think straight anymore. Tachibana smiles and tells her he didn't need to - the clumsy Morishima who has trouble falling in love is the Morishima he fell in love with. They share a kiss while Morishima's towel falls off. Sex is implied afterwards.

Good End: Morishima occasionally spends the night in Tachibana's room while she is in college. Sex is strongly implied.

Normal End: Tachibana buys her a puppy. Morishima sees Tachibana less of a cute kouhai and more of a reliable man.

Bad End: She is crushed. It's one thing to reject guys but she would never betray them like Tachibana does to her. Many years later, Tachibana is a salary man whose company is bought out by another. His new boss turns out to be Morishima. She looks at him with a cold, piercing eyes... nothing like the warm friendly senpai he betrayed those many years ago.

---

Ayatsuji Tsukasa - Hard working class rep. Image is extremely important to her and acts kindly towards others. In reality, she's very distrustful of people and very cynical. She acts like a tsundere towards Tachibana, but her love is sincere. Star of the manga Amagami: Precious Diary.

Best End: Ayatsuji is accused of flirting with Tachibana while planning the Christmas school festival. She reveals her real, cynical personality. Everyone begins to hate her, confirming her cynical belief that people liked her just because she was a class rep. Tachibana becomes her sole pillar of emotional support. She quits being a class rep and forgets about her perfect image. On the night of the school Christmas festival, she and Tachibana sneak into the school and celebrate their own party there. They spend the entire night there. Sex is strongly implied. She becomes truly happy.

Good End: Her personality is never revealed and she never quits being a class rep. She plans out the party. She hugs Tachibana under the Christmas tree in front of everyone. There's a myth that whoever hugs under the true becomes happy forever. Many years later, Ayatsuji and Tachibana visit the school. Ayatsuji tells Tachibana she's afraid... she's been happy for so many years and hopes that happiness will never end. Their child runs up to them.

Normal End: They go to the same college and share the same room. She kicks him out of bed while making breakfast in typical tsundere style. She orders to him to always make her happy.

Bad End: She feels ultimately betrayed. Tachibana is the same to her as everyone else. The void in her heart is her proof and her vow that she will never trust anyone again, including Tachibana.

---

Sakurai Rihoko - Childhood friend who eats a little too much. Has been with Tachibana since elementary school. She may nibble on his finger, thus one of at least three girls who lend the game and franchise its name Amagami, "gentle bite".

Best End: Tachibana spends Christmas with her. He tells her that he always took their relationship for granted but now, it's different. They share a deep, passionate kiss. Many years later in college, Tachibana buys her a cream pastry (her favorite food). Inside it, there's a ring (part of her story, a made up myth about proposing with food and being happy forever). She accepts. They've always been together and always will be.

Good End: Tachibana spends the school Christmas festival with Rihoko. He hugs and realizes how much she means to him. The next year, he joins the tea club but it's closed due to lack of members. Despite all this, she's with Tachibana and that's all that matters.

Normal End: She wakes Tachibana up while in bed by jumping in his bed and going underneath the blanket. The silly stuff reminds her of their childhood and the time they spent together. That will not change.

Bad End: Tachibana begs forgiveness from Rihoko for standing her up on the Christmas date. Rihoko is sick with a cold, but tells him she was never angry at Tachibana and never can be. They repeatedly kiss (Rihoko tells him he might catch the cold). A little while later, Tachibana begs Rihoko to punish him. She makes him eat an all you can eat ice cream parfait. He faints and Rihoko smiles. They'll be best friends forever.

In Rihoko's Bad End, before going to the restaurant, Tachibana asks for Rihoko's forgiveness since he ditches her on Christmas and she gets sick waiting for him. Tachibana meets her while she's sick with a cold and kisses her over and over. She tells him she was never angry at him to begin with and that he'll get sick if he keeps kissing her.

---

Nakata Sae - Shy underclassman with big breasts. Came from an all girls school, afraid of guys.

Best End: She feels badly about making Tachibana be her boyfriend. Tachibana runs after her, telling her how much she means to him. They spend their Christmas watching a movie in a private room. They share a deep, passionate kiss. Sex is strongly implied. Many years later, she walks out of a hospital towards Tachibana... pregnant with his child.

Good End: She works in a maid cafe. (edit: as a maid in a cafe?) She never would have had the confidence to work there hadn't it been for Tachibana's support. One day, she'll make Tachibana fall in love with her.

Normal End: They fool around in the school infirmary. They share a deep kiss. She tells Tachibana to lock the door. Is sex implied? You be the judge.

Bad End: Her parents find out that that she gets sick waiting for Tachibana in the cold. They transfer her to another school. The game ends with her on the rooftop of another school alone, wondering if she'll ever see you again (unlikely).

---

Tanamachi Kaoru - Sex hair who's known Tachibana since middle school. Messes with Tachibana alot - he considers her a "bad" friend. Extremely passionate and not afraid to tell her opinion on things. In her route, she kisses Tachibana a lot and he wonders if she's just messing with her head. She's not, she has it bad for him. She may playfully bite him on the ear, thus one of at least three girls who lend the game and franchise its name Amagami, "gentle bite".

With Kaoru, their entire relationship is based on being "bad" friends. They mess around with each other more like bros. She initiates some pretty hot kisses even before the two are even in a relationship, and Tachibana wonders if she's just messing with his head, which is why he considers her a "bad" friend.

Best End: Her mother is getting married to another man and this is a big issue for Kaoru. Tachibana becomes her emotional support throughout. On Christmas, they spend the night in Tachibana's room. Sex is implied. The game ends with them riding a bike together. They'll be "bad" friends forever.

Good End: They're both in college, sharing a place together. She cuts his hair. She realizes they'll be "bad" friends for a long time to come.

Normal End: Keiko (Kaoru's friend) is dumped again. Tachibana encourages her. Keiko asks him to be her boyfriend. Kaoru punches him in the face. There's no other girl for him but her, she yells.

Bad End: She's crushed but forgives him by throwing him in a river during winter. Tachibana floats away while she yells that she still loves him.

---

Nanasaki Ai - Cool girl who places swimming above everything. In her best (lovers) route, she loves you so much it strains her performance during her swimming tournament. Star of the manga Amagami: Love Goes On!

Best End: They spend their Christmas in a hot spring in the mountains. Tachibana realizes how much she means to him and confesses. She accepts and hugs him while their both in the spring. She's nekkid btw. Many years later, they watch fireworks from their room. Sex is certainly implied somewhere.

Good End: They spend Christmas at the school festival. Tachibana confesses on the rooftop. She accepts. They watch the lighting of the Christmas tree together.

Normal End: Many years later, they're both working in different companies. Nanasaki is late meeting Tachibana at a noodle stand because her boss chews her out for not being married at her age, etc. etc. Tachibana mumbles something about marriage. Nanasaki smiles and asks him what he just said again.

Bad End: Nanasaki is hurt and doesn't talk to him for a while... but eventually forgives him anyway. Many years later, they're talking to each other on a beach with his head on her lap. She realizes that she can never stop loving Tachibana.

---

EXTRA ENDS

Ignored End: You fail to get with anyone. You spend Christmas with Umehara in your planetarium, together wondering if either of you will ever get a girlfriend. You can ask him what's up with certain girls whom you ignored.

Teacher End: More like bad decision ends. If you chose to confess to her on a whim, she'll blush and hit you for being an idiot. You, like a idiot, forget about getting to know any other girl and wait until you graduate from school to see if you can confess again. The game ends there and you never see if he succeeds or not.

Miya/Imouto End: Happens if you raise certain flags with her and if you fail to get with any girls. On Christmas, she finds a kitten. Tachibana goes with her to find her mommy cat. He saves the mom cat from being run over. Miya and Tachibana see the kitten and mom cat playfully bite each other (amagami!). Tachibana explains amagami is a form of affection. Miya bites Tachibana to show how much she loves her nii-nii. (She is one of at least three girls who justify the title. The others include Kaoru and Rihoko.)

Risa Ends: Risa is your secret, yandere stalker. She prevents the famous rejection many years ago since that girl was doing it for kicks. Her path is also activated when you activate another girl's path. Risa will sabotage it by spreading lies and making the girl hate you (Ayatsuji will be the only girl who won't believe her).

- If you accept Risa, you'll be a happy couple in college.

- If you refuse her, she will tell the teacher's about your secret porn stash in school and you will be suspended. Rumors that you're a perv will circulate around the school.

---

IGNORED EPILOGUES

These aren't endings so much as they are epilogues. You ignore the girl, the girl ignores you. Umehara explains what happens to each girl when you no longer talk to them.

Morishima Haruka: She befriends another cute kouhai who follows her around. The cute kouhai confesses and like everyone else, is flat out rejected. In other routes, you'll learn that kouhai is a superficial prick who'd never get to know Morishima like Tachibana would.

Ayatsuji Tsukasa: Works as hard as ever on making the Christmas festival a success. There are some rumors that she might be hiding some (which she is... her perfect image is important to her and something you break when you get to know her).

Sakurai Rihoko: She becomes a TV idol. Tachibana is hurt because he's her childhood friend yet she never tells you about it.

Nakata Sae: She's shy around guys. In her route, you break that shyness. In her ignored epilogue, she "befriends" some otaku who make her cosplay in revealing outfits. Miya might also join in the cosplay, depending on your decisions.

Tanamachi Kaoru: She draws on the side and gets published. She doesn't tell Tachibana about it despite being friends.

Nanasaki Ai: She works hard in her swim tournament. In her lovers route, this falls apart since she falls in love with you.

That aside, a pic of Tsukasa and her cute daughter? From the game?

Much appreciated... Good thing the anime made Tsukasa's daughter even cuter. "Atashi mou, chuu~" :onion6:

And yeah, Risa is quite fond of hiding in plain sight in both openings. I usually look at that corner whenever I watch the opening song instead of noticing Rihoko, Kanae, Haruka and Hibiki.

Any chance that you have screenshots of Sae and Rihoko's "Best Ends" from the game?

Is that Risa holding Junichi's hand in the last pic? (Bottommost right, the one with the gravure magazines)

That's similar as what Wikipedia says.
But there is another 'trap' character that only gives you a bad end.

IIRC, that would be Maya Takahashi, the teacher.

Anyway, it's been a while, but has anyone seen the Blu-Ray versions of the episodes? I hear there are some extended scenes, and I want to know what the extended scenes are about.

Also, character monologues:
- Haruka
- Kaoru
- Sae
- Ai
- Rihoko
- Tsukasa
"Rip and Tear. Rip and tear until it's done."

Just dropping by this thread one more time to inform that the Miya bonus episode (episode 26) is out. Nishishishi~!

No incest-y undertones though. But I am glad to see the Amagami girls again...at least from the partial POV of Miya. Though one of the scenes made me ask: Was Ai always taller than Sae? :\
lulz-worthy partsShow
- Miya stalking Junichi with each girl he meets... She later gets noticed by none other than Risa, after which they stalk Junichi together.
- Miya's "gentle bite" on Junichi. (Also doubles as a heartwarming moment.)
- The "preview" for episode 1 of the series (the start of Haruka's arc). "Endless recursion of time," anyone? Just kidding...
"Rip and Tear. Rip and tear until it's done."

Oh, is it out already? :) Well I'll be watching that soon. Too bad there probably won't be any Tsukasa moments though :P

The only word after Ep.26 is this:
"My sister can't be... this... cute...!"

Yay for thread necromancy(?) ;P

Apparently there's a couple more OAV specials even after we've seen the Miya bonus episode. Each 15-minute special is split into three mini-episodes that contain omake scenes for the main girls. So far, there's the first special which contains mini-episodes for Haruka, Kaoru and Sae (with Risa occasionally stalking in each mini-episode).

Can't wait to see the second special (which should contain the mini-episodes for Ai, Rihoko and Tsukasa).
Friendzone-chanShow
I hope Rihoko finally gets her confession from Junichi in the mini-episode.

Subs are now out for the second Amagami SS OAV. Sadly...
SpoilerShow
No confession scene for Rihocchi... :tearsad: How more can they emphasize her "Friendzone" status? (On second thought, don't answer that.) Though I did have a laugh at her borrowing Charlotte's (France-tan, not the witch) catchphrase. ("Junichi no ecchi!")

Ai and Junichi make skirt pockets slightly kinky (though Ai later makes him help with her groceries as punishment). Tsukasa, meanwhile, makes Junichi swear off melon bread altogether and shows her scary side in the process. Yikes.
Anyway...
where's Stalker-chan (or, "Risa Intel" locations)Show
Ai - Hiding in a bunch of trees.
Rihoko - Hiding in a closet.
Tsukasa - Hiding behind a tree eating a melon bread as the camera pans out and Tsukasa says, "Like I care." A scare chord can also be heard.
"Rip and Tear. Rip and tear until it's done."

But
in response to ElvinskyShow
It was short though, I thought it would be full 24 minutes but not quite what I had expected. Rihoko could have used more time same with Ai and Tsukasa. I didn't expect a lot of story since each segment was divided equally.
