'Interactive' Space Opera

Post by melange » Tue Jul 06, 2010 7:10 am

I've been spending the past 2 weeks or so learning to use the Processing programming language. And managed to create an 'interactive' version of Space Opera:-
http://www.internationalsaimoe.com/stat ... er/season/

Using the right and left arrow buttons you can switch through what the situation was like from Aquamarine 1 all the way to Ruby 1 (as of July 6 2010).

The Up and Down arrow buttons lets you toggle through 3 different views:-
1. ordered by points gained
2. ordered by SDO
3. ordered by vote difference

From now on I'll be using this to generate the space opera images on the front page, as it frees me from having to manually update each circle position and size in Illustrator like I previously had to do. With this all I have to do is save tab delimited data in txt files and the script automatically calculates/sizes everything for me

It's still a work in progress and there are many things I would like to add that I don't yet know how to. It will be constantly updated as time goes along.

The charts look really neat! Good work! :D

My only quibble is the SDO chart: why, for example, in Emerald 7, Shana has won the necklace but her marker is in the third position?

Currently the data is all overall data (white/grey standings chart on website) and not period specific (colored standings charts). Shana is in third because in overall SDO she is third. The only period specific data is the light white 'in-running-for-necklace' lines that go from the character marker to the center.

That explains that then... I was expecting period specific data instead of overall. :D

The interactive Viewer has been updated for ISML 2011

http://www.internationalsaimoe.com/stat ... er/season/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I haven't had time to make a display of what the controls are within the viewer but here is a summary

Image

The new addition is a 'Vote Matrix' view that lets you see the performance of each character compared to every other.

Vote Matrix is a very helpful function that can aid in analysis. Thank you melange.

The problem here is that the Processing software (linked in first post) melange used to create the maps changed one or two years ago, such that the source code he wrote doesn't apply anymore. :(

If you know of an alternative, maybe, that can tie into Adobe Illustrator, then we may possibly be able to resume this. Otherwise, we'll continue with just static maps every round.

I looked over Processing, and the foundation looks the same. If I have a copy of the source code, I could probably update it with new non-deprecated code. Or melange could do that - the language seems really simple.

The Processing script I wrote works fine. I can view the 'interactive' stuff just fine, but its the step that gets it into a format that other people online can see that is the issue. Its just that processing has suspended support for the java-based plugin that was used to translate what I did there to something viewable and manipulatable by other persons online in a browser. There is some sort of workaround available but it is not recommended.

Ummm
I'm certain you can use HTML5 to display Processing. Have you looked at it yet?
Apparently Processing now only supports JScript but that should be fine as well...

Well thank you for looking at and prodding me about it. The last time I looked at it was about a year ago and processing had not integrated processing.js into its client yet making figuring out how to adapt the processing script I had to work with processing.js a tall order for me with my work schedule. But now I see that they've integrated it relatively seamlessly and with relatively minor adjustments I've made it work again.

You can find it at http://www.internationalsaimoe.com/stat ... er/season/ as before (2013 only)
