Requesting Translation Checks

Post by Crisu » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:33 pm

It's time for another translation session. :)

I need the following~
Chinese Simplified - character namesShow
C.C
Elsie de Lute Irma
Gokō "Kuroneko" Ruri
Ika-Musume
Kiriya Nozomi
Kōsaka Kirino
Saber
Stocking
Chinese Simplified AND Chinese Traditional - series namesShow
Amagami SS
Angel Beats!
Detective Conan
Dragon Crisis!
Fortune Arterial
Fractale
GOSICK
IS (Infinite Stratos)
Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai
Katekyō Hitman Reborn!
Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?
MM!
Ore no Imōto
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

Seitokai Yakuindomo
Sora no Otoshimono
Toaru Majutsu no Index
Yosuga no Sora
Yumekui Merry
Please provide full official titles, preserving applicable official capitalization, spacing, and/or punctuation.
If some names don't have a translation and stay in their English forms when localized, that's fine. :)

And if you're just THAT bored, here's my whole table for you to look over and double-check to see if any translations I currently have are valid.

http://www.internationalsaimoe.com/cont ... _table.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The text fields are tab-delimited, so you can should easily be able to paste into spreadsheet software, if that helps you organize things.

Thanks to exec, Basaka, maglor*, and chaosprophet who are the primary contributors to translations. Thank you to everyone else who has helped us, too~!
* There are spots missing for Korean, but maglor plans to get those to me by the end of the weekend.

For all the series name I used the default name that appears on Baike.
Popularity of a translation is determined by the number of members of its Baidu Tieba.
Obviously all of the names are correct. That is why I did popularity comparison.

The reason I chose 月咏歌呗 instead of 星那歌呗 is the default discussion board name (There are 15862 active members): http://tieba.baidu.com/f?kw=%D0%C7%C4%C7%B8%E8%DF%C2" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

命运长夜:http://baike.baidu.com/view/335748.htm [Fate/Stay Night might be better but that is what Baike says]
I agree with 142, but Asuka's full name may confuse people like me.
I agree 123 as well.

Hoshina Utau correspond to 星那歌呗 and Tsukiyomi Utau correspond to 月咏歌呗, we choose the first.
We use rarely 命运长夜 in discussion (命运守护夜 or even better than it),usually we just say "FSN" or "Fate", so we don't think it's necessary to translate it. (such as angel beats=AB) You mentioned baike.baidu.com, but i don't think, however, if it can be a good reference.

Thank you very much for all your help. It looks like translation into Chinese is a lot more complicated than I originally thought.

I prefer whatever is more correct. However, I've been learning that there isn't one single "correct" way to interpret someone's name, so it may become based on popularity at that point. This is a challenge that I'm slowly learning to get through, since there are rules in other languages (e.g. English, Korean, and I think Russian) for phoneticizing Japanese names but it is not as clear in Chinese. Also, sometimes, what is popular isn't necessarily "fair," and I have to consider that.

Regardless, I'm a little short on time so I haven't been able to read and check every entry here. The Preliminary Groups are released, and I merged whatever I could into the current translation script on that page. Getting the right Chinese names will still be a work in progress.

Other notes:
- Yes, we prefer Hoshina Utau over Tsukiyomi Utau.
- For certain titles like Fate/stay night: if the title were to appear on television or in magazines in an official capacity, would it be printed in Chinese or would it be in English? It's a little more than what you use in casual conversation but what would be used in a 'legal' sense. Of course, we shouldn't use something so obscure that nobody would know what you're talking about.

I believe "Suigintou" should be "Suigintō".

Suggestions for Korean Translation:
SpoilerShow
Group 1
엘류시아 드 루트 일마 (신만이 아는 세상) -> 엘류시아 데 루트 이마 (신만이 아는 세계) ; series name change should be applied to all other KamiNomi characters
아유자와 미사키 (회장님은 메이드님) -> 아유자와 미사키 (회장님은 메이드사마!) ; latter ver. is official.
Group 2
센도우 에리카 (폴쳔 알티리어) -> 센도우 에리카 (FORTUNE ARTERIAL) ; original title is in English; or else use 포츈 아테리얼, more commonly used than what's written now.
Group 3
히메지 미즈키 (바보와 시험과 소한수) -> 히메지 미즈키 (바보와 시험과 소환수) ; former is a typo; change should be applied to all other BakaTest characters
Group 5
호시나 우타우 (수호 캐라!) -> 호시나 우타우 (수호 캐릭터!) ; latter is more used
셀티 스툴슨 (듀라라라!!) -> 세르티 스툴루손 (듀라라라!!) ; latter is more used, and I believe that's the official translated ver. of her name.
Group 8
쿠로이 마토오 (블랙 락 슈터) -> 쿠로이 마토 (블랙★록 슈터)
이나미 마히루 (워킹(로동)!!) -> 이나미 마히루 (WORKING!!) ; original title is in English; or else just use 워킹!! since (로동) part is unnecessary and IMO causes confusion.
Group 9
빅토리카 드 블루아 (고식) -> 빅토리카 드 블루아 (GOSICK) ; I don't really feel that change is necessary but I believe it was published as GOSICK in Korean translated ver. too.
타네시마 포프라 (워킹(로동)!!) -> 타네시마 포푸라 (WORKING!!) ; 포푸라 is more used.
Group 14
소류 아스카 랭그리 (에반게리온) -> 소류 아스카 랑그레이 (신세기 에반게리온) ; latter is more used
Group 16
니노 (아라카와 다리 밑) -> 니노 (아라카와 언더 더 브리지) ; latter is official Korean translated ver.

I understand all your arguments. I totally agree on using "Fate/Stay Night" in English form. If for any chance the visual novel will be translated officially, which will never happen for certain, 命运长夜 or a Chinese name would be used instead. I just referenced Baike, because it is just like Wikipedia to USA. It can be a very good reference sometimes but lack of legit source to back up.

Lastly, a little thought on the translation of "Hoshina", I think it should be 星“名”歌呗 instead of 星“那”歌呗. Not only 星名歌呗 is used in Baike, also it is a better translation since I do know a little hair of Japanese. "Hoshi" means "star" in English and 星 in Chinese. Since the first character of her family name is a direct meaning translation, we should directly translate the following character "na"(な) as well. Thus, "na"should be translated as “名”, the kanji form, instead of “那”, the foreign sound translation of "ナ" in katagana. For example, Li Na (李娜) was once translated as リー・ナ.

There are also a several examples for name translation. First one is that "Nayuki" なゆき (名雪) is translated directly. な corresponds to 名 and ゆき means 雪. However, we don't translate "Nanako" ななこ (菜菜子)(from Da Capo) directly, because the direct translation (using the kanji characters) would not make any sense. In our case, Hoshina can be translated to 星名 or 星那. Either one is correct in some sense. To me, 星那 hardly expresses any meaning, but 星名 means the "name of the star". Generally speaking, our family names consist various meanings. Therefore, I go with the translation of 星名歌呗.

신만이 아는 세계 is more preferable. I must have been temporarily distracted when I was typing this. As for 드 vs 데, I believe this should follow how Spanish pronounce the prefix 'de'. If 'de' is pronounced usually as 'Dw', that is consonanace 'd' without much of a vowel, '드' should be used. If 'de' is pronounced as 'deh' with strong 'eh' sound for the vowel part,' 데' should be used. As far as I know 'de' is most often pronounced without much of vowel 'eh' part thus I think we should keep it as '드' unless those fluent in Spanish tells us otherwise. As for '일마', in original Japanese, this part is written as 'イーマ' with the hyphen indicating long vowel like sound. This is very often used to indicate presence of soft 'r' consonance. Irma = '일마 ' is a real female name ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irma_%28name%29" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ). Ima '이마' is not used as name anywhere. I do believe '일마' to be more closer to authentic name, for in case of Western names and words, Japanese official version cannot be trusted. By the way, the first name may be better written as 에류시아. In whatever language other than Japanese, her name is a mess........... ._.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elusia" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; : Elusia is a genus of moths of the Crambidae family.

아유자와 미사키 (회장님은 메이드님) -> 아유자와 미사키 (회장님은 메이드사마!) ; latter ver. is official.

'사마' is not a Korean word. If the translation should be made into as proper a Korean as possible, we can't randomly throw in Japanese word as is into the translation. Having mixture of the title meaning translated into Korean while keeping the sound in another part makes little sense. 메이드 is kept because that word has now taken somewhat different meaning from proper word '하녀', a word that is avoided due to its class connotation . I do need to add exclamation mark though, thus '회장님은 메이드님!'

Group 2
센도우 에리카 (폴쳔 알티리어) -> 센도우 에리카 (FORTUNE ARTERIAL) ; original title is in English; or else use 포츈 아테리얼, more commonly used than what's written now.

Recent experience told me that Korean people in general are uncomfortable with English in any form. If you are sure that vast majority of the Korean people can recognize 'Fortune Arterial' compared to any other written out form, then I will agree to the change to English. In this matter, I do wish we can receive an input from someone currently residing in Korea. If we do decide to write the sound out in Korean, our policy, again, is to write out the sound as close to the original as possible, unless there is a form that has became too dominant to ignore. I have seen variations like '포춘 아테리얼, 붉은 약속, 포튠알테리얼' and some others circulating in Korean websites. When there are such confusion, I hope to go with proper pronunciation I can objectively refer to ( http://www.thefreedictionary.com/arterial" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/arterial" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) . I actually wonder how strong is the 'o' like sound in real English pronunciation. If people can tell me it is strong, I should actually write it out as '알티리오' or ' 알티리올' depending on whether the 'l' at the end is weak or strong. Anyway, do tell us how most Koreans will probably prefer this. Translation of the meaning of the word was not used because I have no idea about the meaning of the phrase 'Fortune Arterial'

Group 3
히메지 미즈키 (바보와 시험과 소한수) -> 히메지 미즈키 (바보와 시험과 소환수) ; former is a typo; change should be applied to all other BakaTest characters

바보와 시험과 소환수 : Yes this is correct. I made a typo

Group 5
호시나 우타우 (수호 캐라!) -> 호시나 우타우 (수호 캐릭터!) ; latter is more used

수호 캐릭터! : I guess this is better

셀티 스툴슨 (듀라라라!!) -> 세르티 스툴루손 (듀라라라!!) ; latter is more used, and I believe that's the official translated ver. of her name.

스툴루손 : I found the real Icelandic root of the last name. Yes, in this case, Official version got it right. BUT!
셀티 : I still defend this as closer to the original sound

Group 8
쿠로이 마토오 (블랙 락 슈터) -> 쿠로이 마토 (블랙★록 슈터)

offering compromise : 블랙★락 슈터 - This form is in use in Korea as well, and is closer to original English word sound

이나미 마히루 (워킹(로동)!!) -> 이나미 마히루 (WORKING!!) ; original title is in English; or else just use 워킹!! since (로동) part is unnecessary and IMO causes confusion.

(로동) I guess I need to give up on this joke. The question is whether using '워킹!!' or 'WORKING!!' . I do wish to avoid using Roman alphabets as much as possible in Korean translation, but if overwhelming number of Koreans are using 'WORKING!!' instead of '워킹!!', then I guess I have to abide. Do want some additional input. My real preference was to use the meaning of the word, but there is different feel to the word 'Working' compared to 'Labor' and believe it is better to keep it ambiguous by using the sound translation instead of translating the real meaning.

Group 9
빅토리카 드 블루아 (고식) -> 빅토리카 드 블루아 (GOSICK) ; I don't really feel that change is necessary but I believe it was published as GOSICK in Korean translated ver. too.

Same 'use of English in Korean title' question. This is one case where I am much more for the Korean, because my sources tells me that author actually intended to use 'Gothic' thus wrote it in Katagana, and the publisher merely translated it back to English based solely on the sound as they didn't know such word as 'Gothic' existed. Using Korean form let us remain true to not just the sound of Japanese title, but likely also the original author's intended word's sound.

Also with Victorique's name, notice how they wrote the sound for 'de'

타네시마 포프라 (워킹(로동)!!) -> 타네시마 포푸라 (WORKING!!) ; 포푸라 is more used.

The background story do tell us that her parent intended to use the word 'Poplar'. If so, '포프라' is closer to the original English word sound. 포프라 is also used in Korea as well. When overwhelming majority is not reached, I really wish to keep it closer to original language sound if practical.

Group 14
소류 아스카 랭그리 (에반게리온) -> 소류 아스카 랑그레이 (신세기 에반게리온) ; latter is more used

Again Original English word Argument for 랭그리. As for the title, I agree to adding '신세기'.

Group 16
니노 (아라카와 다리 밑) -> 니노 (아라카와 언더 더 브리지) ; latter is official Korean translated ver.

아라카와 다리 밑 , this fully translate the meaning of the title into Korean. 아라카와 언더 더 브리지 this is sound duplicate into Korean. Unless there is overwhelming support for using the sound version, I prefer proper translation of meaning in to Korean if possible for the title. I also heard that a possible reason for using English words instead of normally existing Japanese word was to avoid the negative reception by the commercial entity to concept of promoting story that makes fun of homeless people dwelling under a bridge : Using English title offers slight more detachment to the situation as people are very likely to just consider it as proper noun, instead of pondering 'What is there under the bridge?'

Again, please provide more input to these matters. I had spent good deal of time thinking about the translations, and to many of them, I am still wavering between some possibilities.

The Korean translations I am agreeing with imbehindyou

Group 1: 신만이 아는 세상 => 신만이 아는 세계

회장님은 메이드님 => 회장님은 메이드님! ( the exclamation mark part is being agreed. 사마 vs 님, we still need to talk about )

Group 3: 바보와 시험과 소한수 => 바보와 시험과 소환수

Group 5: 수호 캐라! => 수호 캐릭터!
스툴슨 => 스툴루손

Group 8: 블랙 락 => 블랙★락 ( ★ part is agreed. 락 vs 록, we still need to talk about it )
(로동) => Needs to be removed as being redundant. It was partly a joke as well, deliberately using the form used by North Koreans.

Group 14: 에반게리온 => 신세기 에반게리온

Really, I'm just following the official Korean translated version that publishers used / and more widely used. I strongly believe that being official ver. or being the most useful / convenient ver. should come before sticking to how it's supposed to sound in "original" language.

1. Elsie
As for which one we should use, 데 or 드, in Elsie's case, her Japanese name uses デ (데) instead of ド (도/드). Since ド was used in Victorique's name, I see that 드 is right for her name. Elsie's case is different and could be debated. But I think "엘류시아 데 루트 이마" is the official version. Also, searching for "엘류시아 데 루트 이마" (with quotation marks) gives you 2340 entries while "엘류시아 드 루트 이마" gives you 1440 entries. Using the same name but with 일마 gives you... almost none. For 일마 or 이마, again, I'm just following official version.

2. Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
회장님은 메이드사마! is the official Korean translated version that the publishers used. Don't ask me why they didn't translate 사마 into 님, but that was the official version they used and I personally believe we should stick to official version as much as possible. Also "회장님은 메이드사마" gives you 8.2 million results vs "회장님은 메이드님" with 131000 results. Though I don't have a big problem with 회장님은 메이드님, it sounds very awkward when you read it aloud since 회장님 already contains the word 님... it's really weird when you put 회장님 and 메이드님 right next to each other.

3. Fortune Arterial
My problem with 폴쳔 알티리어 is that 1. no one uses it 2. it's hard to recognize right away that it's actually referring to Fortune Arterial. No one uses 폴쳔 알티리어. In comparison "포츈 아테리얼" gives you 5.76 million results.

4. Celty
I actually don't have as much problem with 셀티 but once again I prefer 세르티 because it's official and "셀티 스툴루손" gives less than 50 results while "세르티 스툴루손" gives you over 28k results.

5. Kuroi Mato and Black Rock Shooter
쿠로이 마토는 마글러님 코멘트가 없어서 모르겠는데, マト이므로 (장음이 없으므로) 마토 가 되어야 합니다. 그리고 작품명은, 외래어 표기법에 의하여 록으로 쓰는게 맞습니다.

6. WORKING!! and GOSICK
I have no big problem with 워킹!!, but WORKING!! seems more...right because even the Korean publishing company stylizes the title as WORKING!! (워킹!!) <- 워킹 in parenthesis. Same with GOSICK.

7. 타네시마 포푸라
"타네시마 포푸라" 30400 vs "타네시마 포프라" 6300

8. Asuka
"소류 아스카 랑그레이" 115000 vs "소류 아스카 랭그리" 1170

9. Arakawa Under the Bridge
아라카와 언더 더 브리지 -> Official, 872000 results compared to 아라카와 다리 밑 with 2880.

Here is the big difference in philosophy, where I believe we have to be the light for the truth, thus need to search out for what is the most correct way to write it in Korean.

1. Elsie
As for which one we should use, 데 or 드, in Elsie's case, her Japanese name uses デ (데) instead of ド (도/드). Since ド was used in Victorique's name, I see that 드 is right for her name. For 일마 or 이마, again, I'm just following official version.

In English websites イーマ is more often written as Irma as Irma is a real female name that is also used by Spanish speaking people. Furthermore, her full name in English never was written out in official way, as all her product has the friendly name of 'Elsie'. The reason why '드' is correct for Victorica is because 'de Blois' is a real name of French Nobility. You cannot trust that ド as it is sometimes written for 'du' which is also used by French. The fuller discussion can be found here (http://ryouiki.wordpress.com/). There still are much questions about her name, so I would really like to hear what a Spaniard would say about her name, before continuing the discussion.

2. Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
회장님은 메이드사마! is the official Korean translated version that the publishers used. Don't ask me why they didn't translate 사마 into 님, but that was the official version they used and I personally believe we should stick to official version as much as possible. You are right about "it's really weird when you put 회장님 and 메이드님 right next to each other.". Furthermore, I realize that even more proper translation is "회장은 메이드님!". On this issue, my Korean Cultural pride makes me very reluctant to bastardize Korean by unnecessary mixture of Korean and Japanese a commercial company made based on some commercial reason, when good proper Korean is possible and understandable. Please check out the following opinion expressed by another Korean ( http://mirror.enha.kr/wiki/%ED%9A%8C%EC ... %EB%A7%88! )

We don't have to use the commercial translation of which I know to be horrible quality. I did several translations when I was in Korea, to and from English, and often those at high up commanded me to vulgarize what I wrote because they thought it was too dry. Still, I will present your view to other staff members and give it fair hearing.

Nobody uses it because almost no one bothered to check the correct pronunciation and meaning of those words in Korea. Let me tell you something. Before 1950s, the word 'cup' was written as '고뿌' ( http://merovingian.tistory.com/82 ). Should we have kept using '고뿌'? Also think how you think a Korean Movie Title be translated into English. Now imagine that you saw the English title for a Korean movie you know being of just wrong, because the importing company was lazy with translation. How should you say the title of the movie is if you are discussing this movie with someone who doesn't know Korean, yet is serious about movies?

4. Celty
I actually don't have as much problem with 셀티 but once again I prefer 세르티 because it's official and "셀티 스툴루손" gives less than 50 results while "세르티 스툴루손" gives you over 28k results.

I wonder how many of that 50 result is due to I advocating '셀티' sometime ago.

5. Kuroi Mato and Black Rock Shooter
쿠로이 마토는 마글러님 코멘트가 없어서 모르겠는데, マト이므로 (장음이 없으므로) 마토 가 되어야 합니다. 그리고 작품명은, 외래어 표기법에 의하여 록으로 쓰는게 맞습니다.
쿠로이 마토는 마글러님 코멘트가 없어서 모르겠는데, マト이므로 (장음이 없으므로) 마토 가 되어야 합니다.
This, you are right. It is my mistake.
그리고 작품명은, 외래어 표기법에 의하여 록으로 쓰는게 맞습니다.
By now, you should guess that I am of the few who believes large portion of 'Standard Korean letter convention for Foreign words' is very wrong. I am also against many part of 'Official Roman Alphabet convention for Korean names' because, again, it is based not on common phonetic rules of pronunciation of English words, but guess at how Westerners might pronounce Roman Alphabet syllables based on Japanese Romanji-convention. Again, I will present your argument to the staff, but I believe someone needs to make a stand for what is true and correct if you want changes to occur in the right direction.

6. WORKING!! and GOSICK
I have no big problem with 워킹!!, but WORKING!! seems more...right because even the Korean publishing company stylizes the title as WORKING!! (워킹!!) <- 워킹 in parenthesis. Same with GOSICK.

Another of my worry is that some Koreans may not be able to read 'Working!!' , but they will be able to read '워킹!!'. For this, as with 'Fortune Arterial', since the original title is English words, I am not too concerned even if we decide to give up on pure Korean writing here, but with 'Gothic = GOSICK', I believe using '고식' may also be truer to the original writer's intent, thus really do wish to keep it Korean here.

7. 타네시마 포푸라
"타네시마 포푸라" 30400 vs "타네시마 포프라" 6300

8. Asuka
"소류 아스카 랑그레이" 115000 vs "소류 아스카 랭그리" 1170

9. Arakawa Under the Bridge
아라카와 언더 더 브리지 -> Official, 872000 results compared to 아라카와 다리 밑 with 2880.

Thank you for the numbers. I will present these numbers to other staff and discuss what version we will use. I would again like to make note, that there is good probability, half of those search hits were because I started using the 'correct' form here in ISML.

Yea, each to his or her own, I guess. I still stand by my suggestions, though. Don't really mind if Kaichou wa Maid sama gets changed to 회장은 메이드님!
But one thing I just can't back up on is 폴쳔 알티리어. I thought one of the main reasons why ISML decided to provide foreign language translation was to help ease the process of voting and participation for people outside English-speaking communities, so why confuse the heck out of them with 폴쳔 알티리어?

To recap, here is the latest list of what had been agreed to plus things I will relent.

  • Group 1: 신만이 아는 세상 => 신만이 아는 세계

Group 2: 폴쳔 알티리어 => Fortune Arterial ( I think further discussion on this will be counterproductive )

Group 3: 바보와 시험과 소한수 => 바보와 시험과 소환수

Group 5: 수호 캐라! => 수호 캐릭터!

Group 8: 쿠로이 마토우 => 쿠로이 마토
워킹(로동)!! => WORKING!!(워킹!!) : Believe this form satisfy the demand to concur with commercial translation while having Korean portion

Group 9: 타네시마 포프라 -> 타네시마 포푸라 : I realized that even what I wrote before can't really be considered authentic pronunciation, thus the more prevalent form should work here.

Group 14: 에반게리온 => 신세기 에반게리온

Asking for imbehindyou's approval ( consent )

  • Group 2: 회장님은 메이드님 => 회장은 메이드님!

We need somebody fluent in Spanish to give us some insight into this name, of which the trouble extends beyond merely Korean Translation

Not Korean, but I do think it will be better to use the more commonly accepted/official titles, as that will help more "casual" reader/viewers, instead of the dedicated watchers (like most of us) who should know the names through both spelling anyway.

I'm okay with 회장은 메이드님! and 셀티 스툴루손 but I prefer 세르티 스툴루손. I think most people would be okay with 셀티 but still prefer 세르티 like me.

In Korean, Rock Music is written as ' 락 음악 ', more often than '록 음악' ( margin is slim, 3,970,000 vs 3,850,000 ) Since plenty of wide spread use for '락' is seen, I think we should keep it as '락'. We do need the star, though, as mentioned by imbehindyou.

Group 9: 고식 If Koreans are not using Roman alphabet, this is how they are typing the series in Korean. Since there is almost no chance for confusion for this, I think we should stick with Korean transcription of the name, instead of leaving it in English Form

Group 14: 소류 아스카 랭그리 - 랑그레이 is solely for Asuka's name and no other place in Korea. Google search for 랭그리 returns 138,000 results in very diverse subjects. 랑그레이 returns 636,000 results almost exclusively associated with Asuka's name. I would like to make a claim that only reason 랑그레이 has been used in Korean is due to Asuka's name being translated as such, when the translation was made by someone who knew little about English. If 'Langley' in general is translated almost exclusively as '랭그리' except for Asuka's case, I do believe I have very strong case to claim that '랑그레이' is simply wrong and not the common form when we talk about Korean population in general, unless we limit the discussion to only Korean Anime fans.
Finally the name that has given many some headaches. In interest of bringing about a closure to the debate, I am accepting 엘류시아 데 루트 이마 over my former choice of 엘류시아 드 루트 일마.
