Hmm some very different views on when you should/shouldn't abstain - I would say if you're either very very VERY torn and can't make up your mind abstain or if you dont have any real knowledge you might want to or if you just plain don't care you could. Though overall usually I prefer to vote then to abstain

I abstain when it's 2-3 characters I don't particularly like/know. If I like two characters, no matter how much I don't want to decide between them, I will.

I only abstain when I don't like either character to the point I won't vote for them...which is rather rare. If it is two or more I like I let Fate decide (or Chance perhaps, because Fate wants Nanoha to win).

I also abstain when I do not like the characters in the arena or if I do not have much knowledge about any characters. I do not want to just blind vote which could alter the results..

That is certainly a fair point

Well, the most important thing is to enjoy yourselves and the contests. But I figure that the pictures are there for help in deciding; it's sorta difficult to be able to know every single contestant! And so for the girls I don't know, I like to use the pics as "snapshots" and decide whether she matches my definitions of what is moe to me. It's either that or catch YouTube snippets, which I've done in the past but don't have time for this year.

And the more votes the girls get, the more you help them advance in the tourney, and they may need those votes down the line. Naturally, if you dislike all three, you'd abstain. I haven't come to that yet, but can always find one of them to be moe. To me, this isn't about whether you like or dislike, or who is the more popular; it's about which girl is simply more moe.

But it's been interesting reading the reasons why people abstain, so thanks

I'm still gonna be pissed for multiple reasons after this.... and not just because of the difficult choices (I'm look at you KS)

It's also worth considering which characters you like might end up in a close match and need your vote more. If the character you like most is clearly going to take 1st or clearly will be left in the dust and take 3rd, it's worth consdering voting for your second favorite so they have a better chance at reaching 1st or 2nd place.

Sometimes I vote against who I believe will win when I don't particularly care of the winner, just to make the competition that little bit more exciting.

In a sense thats why I voted for Louise over Nagi - I support Nagi (HnG) slightly more than Louise But I would like to try and get Louise second place as - I do not think she will be beating Nagi - Sort of along the same lines I suppose.

I make a point of voting for the character I like the most/is most moe to me out of the three. But if I genuinely don't like all 3, I abstain. I guess the matchups in Round 1 allowed me to fill every arena but not this time. *shrug* I can't give votes to characters I know nothing or don't care about. And I don't believe in hate voting.

Although possible, it's an extremely unlikely thing to occur. It wouldn't change the fact that your vote is much more likely to matter if you vote for a character that has similar strength to another character than a character is is obviously first or last.

For some people Shiki may be very moe, while Tsukasa can be not so moe. I'm not much into moe in any of the two, but at least feels a bit more moe from Shiki than Tsukasa. Each person have their own moe, differents things that makes them feel moe from a character. And, all in all, moe is a likeable feeling, so "moe" and "like" can't be totally separated either.
