I don't get it why characters like Mashiro shouldn't be in a slice of life show, neither Mikhail Tal is not a slice of everyday life. They are just some unique/unusual people living in the same world we live in, seeing the same sky, walking on the same road. What is everyday life after all? Does it have to be a life where everything is normal/usual? I don't think so. Everyday life is a concept that is free and diverse.Desufire wrote:Mashiro was put in there to be moebaitHomura wrote:Umm I guess people like Mikhail Tal are all fictional/unreal then.Homura wrote:SpoilerShow

Just because she's emulating someone who's unusual doesn't make her a believable character. It makes her a bland character that they added a quirk onto to make them "interesting" instead of actually developing them as a character.Homura wrote:I don't get it why characters like Mashiro shouldn't be in a slice of life show, neither Mikhail Tal is not a slice of everyday life. That's too subjective. I never felt that about her, but that's also just my feeling. We should stop at here then.Desufire wrote:Just because she's emulating someone who's unusual doesn't make her a believable character. But I do have a feeling that if Mashiro was a real world artist while Mikhail Tal was a fictional chess master living in Sakurasou, you would then say the same thing "Just because he's emulating someone who's unusual (e.g. Mashiro) doesn't make him a believable character". But again, that's just how I feel.

It's not just about the character archetype that's the problem. She isn't developed well enough to be an interesting character. She just has a personality quirk to make up for the mangaka not figuring out a way to develop her as a character. There are times when she expresses slight emotions, but she never grows from these events and feelings, she just reverts right back to her old self.Homura wrote:But I do have a feeling that if Mashiro was a real world artist while Mikhail Tal was a fictional chess master living in Sakurasou, you would then say the same thing "Just because he's emulating someone who's unusual (e.g. Mashiro) doesn't make him a believable character". Things I miss in H/H :
1. How my body move up and down whenever I see Houreki's avatar
2. How my hands or head form Gin's pose everytime I see Kiwi's avatar

Re: Hurt and Heal *New* Discussion Thread
But Desu, why must Mashiro grow from these events and feelings? If she did that, she wouldn't be Mashiro anymore. Remember the line Mikhail Tal's wife said about Tal? A lot of people have said that if Tal had looked after his health, if he hadn't led such a dissolute life... and so forth. But with people like Tal, the idea of "if only" is just absurd. He wouldn't have been Tal then.Desufire wrote:It's not just about the character archetype that's the problem. She isn't developed well enough to be an interesting character. Desu, I mean there are people who want to grow up and embrace changes, while there are other people who prefer to remain their old self (or the self they have always been) and don't change/develop. Here is my life attitude: Just let people be themselves, don't abruptly/carelessly put our own expectations upon them. This is one of the main reasons why I never had trouble with Mashiro. But I also don't have trouble with your having problem with her, like I said I won't force my expectation on you. I'm simply telling you my opinions.

@Desu
Continuing from our talk in 2016, I have an anime recommendation for you: Fune wo Amu, a true slice of life that is human and real, with all of the main characters feeling more real than Aoyama, I pretty much guarantee you. You should watch it, or maybe you've already completed it.

I can't really get into anime much anymore. I'll watch maybe 1 a year, but I usually find other things to do instead.
