General Video Games Thread

Post by Seishi » Thu Feb 19, 2009 8:21 pm

Not the same as the other thread, this is a way to exchange in a more specific manner what kind of games we play and like. Talk about games you like and don't like. "Top <x>" lists are encouraged as well.

I grew up with the NES/SNES era, as I've had at least some kind of video game system since 1989. At a very early age I got into RPGs, partly due to Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) being one of my first games along with Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link (which is closer to action-RPG compared to the mostly action-adventure games of the rest of the series). Today, I am still a big fan of both the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy series, but I do not spend even a fraction as much time with games as I did during my grade school years.

A quick "all-time" top 10 list would be something like...

1. Final Fantasy VI
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Final Fantasy XII
4. Odin Sphere
5. Dragon Quest VIII
6. Super Mario RPG
7. Secret of Mana
8. Dragon Quest III
9. Pokemon (series)
10. Final Fantasy IX

...but could change within a month, depending on which games I want to (re)play. I find that in my old age (lol) I have become increasingly narrow in my view of which games I want to play. Early on I pretty much played everything, but RPGs were still always my favourite. Nowadays I only really play and look for RPGs.

lol Pretty much any RPG game I can play and massively enjoy, i'm not sure how much more i can say on that lol.

I dont mind other games, sports games tend to bore me rather quickly but most other games are not bad.

As for a top 10...i cant really say.. i love all the final fantasy games, alot of the SNES games like Secret of Mana, super mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, the Zelda games, and so on and so forth

pretty much with me if its RPG its WIN

I'm a big fan of RPGs as well, but the RPGs in my top 10 seem to be rather different ;). Maybe that's because I was introduced to RPGs at an early age with games like Ultima IV instead of Zelda.

I also really enjoy turn based strategy games (which seem to be a dying genre), and space simulators.

It's really hard to create a top 10 games list, I've played so many awesome games over the years and I've probably even managed to forget some of them.

But here it is without much thought:

1. Planescape: Torment
2. Ultima 7
3. Privateer II: The Darkening
4. Fallout 2
5. Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
6. Baldur's Gate II
7. Age of Wonders
8. Ultima Underworld II
9. Warlords III: Darklords Rising
10. Secret of Mana

I'd say the top 5 would be pretty static, but the others could be replaced by any number of other great games.

Well, there is a difference between Western and Japanese RPGs, yes. I didn't get into WRPGs due to lack of computer games. I have tried Baldur's Gate II and Planescape though, both of which seem pretty good.

You too, huh? ;P

Looking back, it seems that RPGs have been a major portion of my video game playing experience; I've played the Marios and Street Fighters, but it's the RPG"s that somehow have dominated my gaming time.

The one problem I seem to have is actually finishing some games: the amount of RPG games I've actually finished represents only a portion of the RPG games I've played: FF I, FF IV, FF VI, Legend of Zelda, Zelda 2, Adventure of Link, Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, Kingdom Hearts, Xenosaga, .hack//infection, Lunar 2, Star Ocean 2, Secret of Mana and probably a couple other games I've forgotten about.

Of the PC RPGs I've run across, I've really only finished Diablo, Neverwinter Nights, plus others I've forgotten about (I think I see a trend here! ).

I really don't have a 'top ten' list of my favorites, but looking at what I've finished, it should be apparent what I do like. :P

.hack//GU, I played the older .hack series, and while its not bad, I wouldn't want to play 4 game with similar gameplay

Persona 3 and 4, a lot of people here seems to have played it, leading me wanting to play it

Star Ocean: YES!!! I forgot to mention this before, I played Star Ocean 3 and it was really good, right now I'm still a huge fan for Star Ocean 3 [though I sux at it and only completed it on easy =.=']

Dynasty Warriors.....
good for killing time

uis, I really recommend you to play Suikoden
[my general feel about the 5 Suikoden games]
1: Classic, began the whole series
2: Epic, horned what was really good from suikoden 1 and with some back story from it
3: First game on PS2, with a bit better graphics somewhat new gameplay, interesting concept [unique to Suikoden series]
4: ok....was a bit boring
5: returns to suikoden 1 and 2 roots with better graphics, slow beginning? [didn't finish it]

I play mainly RTS and TBS.

Age of Empires 2 was the game I got the best at out of all the games I've played.
Starcraft is a classic ofc
Civ 4 and more importantly Fall From Heaven were what really got me into TBS games.
Stronghold (the original) was a lot of fun too.
and even though it's an online game, N. N is amazing.

Oh hey, I own these. Civ IV was incredibly addicting, and I had not played a game in the series before it. My best friend made me play AoE2 with her, and Starcraft I kinda grew up into playing since Blizzard games were my favourite (and some of my only) PC games in the 90's
